English ghost stories

Verin Solal

This books was written by five different author, was publicated in 1981 so its a really old one but
somehow still manage to be captivating. The genre of this book is horror and thats the first time i read a book
from this author. The last book i read by myselft was more than 1 year ago, it was someting called « La
trilogie des fourmis » and i absolutely ATE this one.
This book wasnt really writted by these 6 author together, this book i just a « collection » of 1 horror story of
each author. There is in total 5 horror story :
-Catherine Wells : The Ghost
-H. R. Wakefield : Nurse's Tale
-Richard Hughes : The Ghost
-Elizabeth Walter : Dual Control
-Alfred Noyes : Midnight Express
They have no direct link and are pretty much all pretty captivating. Im gonna sumarise only 2 of
them or else it would be too much information.

Im gonna start with the first story then end on my favorite one. The first story is called ‘the ghost’
by Catherine Wells. It’s a little rich girl who is sick and cannot leave her room and go downstairs to
assist at a party. She’s bored so she call for her uncle to distract her.He wanted to scare everyone at
the party with his scary performance , but seing the girl so sad, he decided to show her a (premiere)
of the performance. The little girl was super happy to have a private performance .The uncle tell her
to wait so he could get ready to scare her ( its not like she could leave the room anyway haha). After
that, scary things happen like object moving by themself and things like that. Then , a real monster
appear and she need try to hide and protect herself in her room. At the moment where the monster
find her , he disseapear and she hear her uncle say « im ready ! »

The second one is called « Dual Control » by Elizabeth Walter."Dual Control" takes place in a
small, quiet English village. The story follows a young couple who move into an old country house.
As soon as they settle in, they begin to notice strange and inexplicable phenomena.
The couple quickly discovers that their house is inhabited by two spirits. One is benevolent and
friendly, while the other is malevolent and seeks to cause harm. The spirits seem to have opposite
motivations and come into conflict, which creates constant tension in the house.
The protagonist, intrigued by these supernatural manifestations, immerses himself in the history of
the house to understand the origin of the spirits and the reasons for their persistent presence. As his
research unfolds, he uncovers a dark secret related to a tragic event that happened in the house years
before.
As the paranormal phenomena escalate, the pair find themselves caught in the middle of a battle
between the two spirits. They must find a way to calm the malevolent ghost while helping the
benevolent spirit find peace.

I, personally really liked this book even if i was reluctant at first, and i’d say i would definitely
recommend this book to a friend, especially if he’s learning english because there is help for the
hard words on the right page ( all in english) so you can really focus on the story and not bother too
much to find the traduction of all the words you dont know.I’d say this book was a 7/10.
