Between June and September, three of the seven species of turtles that inhabit the Pacific Ocean arrive
on the Michoacan coast. These are the Olive Ridley, Giant or Leatherback species and the Black Turtle.
The Olive Ridley turtle spawns on the beaches of Colola and Maruata. The so-called Lute or Giant,
arrives from October to April, but to the beaches of Mexiquillo and Caleta de Campos. These 2 species
reproduce on several beaches in the Pacific, but the Black Turtle does so only in Michoacán. It spawns
during October on the beaches of Colola and Maruata (the same ones occupied by the Olive Ridley
Turtle a month before). "October, sea turtle month", whose objective is to promote ecological awareness,
releasing more than 5,000 hatchlings. The event aims to rescue traditions such as the "baile de tarima",
where music, typical dances and traditional clothing are shown.

General data
The sailfish is considered a species for sport fishing, not commercial, due to the characteristics involved
in capturing it, since once it has taken the hook, it can take the fisherman up to an hour to remove it from
the water due to the force that this species exerts. Among the advantages that Michoacán offers for this
sporting practice, the following preeminences stand out: 1) Abundance of the species, because care has
been taken in its use, while other sites have periodically exploited the resource for fifty years. 2) The
boats set sail from inside the Balsas River and thanks to this their departure does not represent danger
because the breakwaters protect them against the waves. 3) The Sailfish is an abyssal creature that is
only found in deep waters, but on the Michoacán coast these waters are within an hour of navigation,
while in other states the boats must go up to more than four hours. 4) The average weight of the
specimens found in Michoacán waters is 45 to 50 kilograms and it should be noted that this exceeds the
30 kilos of the normal adult fish. 5) During December the fish prefer the coasts, where the water is
warmer. 6) Sailfish only feed when there is light and on the dates of December 10 to 12 there is no full
moon, so it will be easy to find it during the day swimming at shallow depths. 7) The prizes of the
International Tournament organized by the Michoacan coast are the best currently offered for this type
of events throughout the country and are also the most numerous.
