A Planner to Simplify

Sequencing
Where to Start
A meaningful class starts with thoughtful planning. Try asking yourself:

What do I want students to take away from the class?

That could be your class theme.

How are my students feeling? Is there a movement that would benefit them?
There's your anatomical focus.

What words or phrases could I use that may help students feel grounded?

Would students benefit from a specific pranayama practice in this class?

How to Build
Your opening sequence is your warm-up. Try incorporating movement and breathing that invite
heat and motion in all directions. A good opening sequence takes students through movements
similar to what they'll be doing later in class. This first sequence is a great place to take your
class in every direction - forward, backward, sideways, and gentle twisting. It reduces the risk of
injury and helps students take note of tension in their own bodies.

Now on to the building sequence, or main body, of your class. This is the place to get creative!
Now is a good time to circle back to your theme and anatomical focus.

Do you want to build up to a peak pose? If so, what will your peak pose be?
What poses will help prepare students to safely and successfully arrive at the peak pose?
After leaving the peak pose, how can you help students counter the pose and use
opposing muscles?

Maybe you don't want to build to a peak pose. Instead, you could create a shorter
sequence that repeats itself, perhaps adding movements or variety each round.

How to Close
If you like to conclude class with an inversion, think about options for students on different
levels. The closing sequence of the class is a great time to help release any remaining tension
and even out any poses or counterposes taken.

Think about how to help your students have a good experience in savasana. What can you say
to help guide students to a place of peace and relaxation?
