HOW TO MAKE A ROOF

POLYCARBONATE
SLIDING?
One of the many uses of alveolar polycarbonate is as a roof on terraces
because it is resistant, waterproof and allows light to pass through. That is
why we will work on a 3x4m shed to close it at the top with polycarbonate,
but in only 2/3 parts of the shed the polycarbonate will be fixed, and in the
last 1/3 the polycarbonate will be sliding to reduce the greenhouse effect
that in summer It increases considerably on terraces and loggias.

Alveolar polycarbonate should not be perforated since it does not allow expansion and can be
damaged, generating leaks and accumulation of dirt inside. Its correct installation is floating,
since the only thing that is fixed to the promenades are the profiles that go at their joints and
edges.

BEFORE STARTING

•Of the 12 m2 of the shed, the third that will be left sliding will be the external edge, which will be installed respecting
the original beam.
• Remove the original borders that divide the first 2/3 of the shed.

STEPS TO FOLLOW

1 Fix the H profile

• Between each plate there is an assembleable H profile,

which, unlike the classic “H” profiles, facilitates the
installation of the polycarbonate cuts. Cut the profile to
the length that you want to cover with the polycarbonate.

• The profile is separated into a base that corresponds to

the female piece where the screws go, and once the
plates are in place, it is closed with the male piece.

• To

screw the fixed part of the H profile, pointed screws are

used.

RECOMMENDATIONS

The polycarbonate sheets should not be screwed directly, only the profiles are fixed.

Cut the plates

• Once the profiles are installed, measure the space and cut the polycarbonate
sheets with a cardboard knife.

3 Seal the edges
• It is very important that the alveoli are not exposed,
since the entry of any element into them should always be avoided.

• Before putting the polycarbonate in the profile, you must

seal the polycarbonate on the side of the alveoli, the green
tape goes on the upper part and the gray one, which is
breathable, on the lower part, this will prevent moisture
from condensing inside.

Install the polycarbonate

• Put the cut pieces of polycarbonate on the H profiles, and

close it with the male of the profile.

• The alveoli should always point towards the slope. The

side on which you put the green tape should go on top,
because it seals the alveoli. And the side of the gray tape
towards the slope, since being permeable, it will allow
moisture to escape.

• The faces of the plates are not the same either.

The manufacturer recommends removing the self-adhesive
that will protect the top side of the iron, just before installing it. This face has a UV filter, and is recognized because it is the
one with the brand

• At the ends where profile H cannot be used, the

polycarbonate is finished with profile A which is similar to
profile U but has 1 more socket to be able to pass the
screw.

Profiles
The profiles used in the installation of polycarbonate can be H, which are used to join 2
sheets; in U to cover the edges; and in A for the edges.

Seal the joint •The connection of the shed with the wall of the house must
be sealed with neutral silicone, which, being flexible, allows
them to work independently without cracking. plenty of cold
water.

Neutral silicone
For polycarbonate, a neutral silicone should be used, since this will not damage the surface or
corrode the material.

•To prevent the lack of squareness or any irregularity in the

shed from preventing the rail from running correctly,
independent boxes must be built that will be placed within the
space between the beams.

•The frame is built of wood, since the shed is made of wood

and is a material that works with heat and cold, so if it were
made of steel, the wooden shed would work mechanically
and not the metal and polycarbonate frame, which could put
too much force on the rail. That is why wood is used so that
they expand and contract with heat and cold together.

• The size of the frame will depend on the dimensions of

the shed, but the larger frame is made with 1x6" pine. On
the side facing the slope, 1x2" sticks must be attached to
insert the small frame.

7 Protect the frame • Apply a wood protector to the drawer that will be installed
in the shed.

Fix the rails On the small frame fix the sliding wheels.

On the large frame, fix the rails so that the small frame,
which will be covered with polycarbonate, can slide.

sliding system
The sliding system consists of a rail, a wheel and a carriage on which the wheel slides. This mechanism is also used for
closets, furniture and sliding doors in general.

Cut the polycarbonate to the size of the small frames, stick the green and
permeable tapes on their edges, and install the U profiles.

Fix the polycarbonate to the small frames.

• To prevent the rail system from getting wet, a 0.5mm

galvanized steel drip profile must be attached, which
0 consists of a folded steel sheet that at the end has a “J
type” finish that prevents water, a product of its capillarity,
return to the sliding system and cut the drop, causing it to
fall into the polycarbonate.

• Install gutters at the end of the slope on the beam that

acts as a cover. The slope of the gutters should be 5mm
for each meter. It is advisable to use canvas with nails at
each end to define the slope. Then the hooks are placed
at a distance no greater than 60cm and in no case at a
distance less than 5cm from the roof. Consider
downspouts and gutter couplets.
