HUMAN NEEDS ACCORDING TO MASLOW'S PYRAMID

Abraham Maslow was a humanistic psychologist who established a theory about human
motivations and needs, what makes us act the way we do and not otherwise.

This theory, commonly called Maslow's Pyramid, establishes that our actions are born from a
motivation to direct us towards an objective which is to meet certain needs. These needs can be
ordered according to the importance they have in ensuring our well-being.

That is, there is a hierarchy of needs that human beings have. As human beings satisfy their most
basic needs, they develop higher, more complex needs and desires.

What moved him to investigate this theory was to discover what makes people happier and what
they can do to improve their personal development and self-realization. That is why it started
from the basis that every human being has an innate desire to self-actualize. We all have the
ability to achieve our goals, as long as the environment is conducive.

The objectives we have at each moment depend on those we have already achieved and which
ones we still have to achieve according to the pyramid of needs.

Abraham Maslow's theory

In Maslow's Pyramid there are 5 levels of needs, the most basic are at the base, therefore, they
will be the first that we have to achieve. The most complex ones are at the top. We cannot move
to a higher level until we have achieved the level we are at.

These needs are: physiological, security, affiliation, recognition and self-actualization. We start
with the physiological ones and advance in the order mentioned, which is the order of importance
they have.

They can be subdivided into two groups: those deficient (physiological, security, affiliation,
recognition) and the development of the being (self-realization).

The difference is that the deficit ones refer to a cadence, while the developmental ones refer to
the individual's occupations. Satisfying the deficiencies is vital to not have negative feelings. On
the contrary, those of development of the being are important to ensure personal growth to grow
as a person.

The five levels of Maslow's pyramid are:

1. Basic or physiological (biological) needs. They are the base of the pyramid and the rest is
built on this level. The most basic need would be that of physical survival, and this would
be the first to motivate our behavior. These needs are the only ones inherent in every
person: breathing, dressing, eating, resting, sex, etc. Everything related to human beings is
covered so that they can survive.

2. Security needs. It refers to all those aspects that make us feel safe to maintain order and
security in life and to be able to live without fear. That is, physical security (health), having
money (job), need for housing... In this stage, the needs that people need are covered
once the biological needs have already been covered.

3. Social needs. Once the previous needs are met, the third level is related to social needs
that imply feelings of belonging. That is, feeling integrated into society through
interpersonal relationships and emotional development: friendships, partners, family,
being part of a group, receiving and giving affection, etc.

4. Esteem or recognition needs. They are those related to trust, reputation... In fact, Maslow
classified them into two categories: self-esteem -independence, self-confidence, dignity,
achievement, etc.-; and reputation or respect, which precedes self-esteem or dignity.

5. Self-actualization needs. This is the highest level and can only be satisfied once all the
others have been achieved. At this stage is when the human being seeks personal growth
and develops his or her full potential to achieve success. Self-actualized people are those
who are aware of themselves and care about the opinions of others (morality, creativity,
success...). This fifth level is the most rational and the one that would differentiate us from
animals, since the rest are deficiency needs.
