3science Chapter 3
3science Chapter 3
3science Chapter 3
Suppose you live in a remote location. Would you be able to have electric lights?
Could you watch television? Thanks to the Sun, the answer is yes! Like the camper
on the previous page, you could use solar panels to capture the Sun's energy and
transform it into electricity.
Energy from the Sun reaches Earth by traveling in waves. Many types of waves can
travel only through a medium, or matter. Waves in a pond, for example, require
water to travel. Waves from the Sun are different because they can travel through
empty space. A wave that can travel through empty space and through matter is
called an electromagnetic wave. These waves radiate, or spread out, in all
directions from a source. Energy carried by an electromagnetic wave is called
radiant energy. This energy is also known as electromagnetic radiation.
You will read in this lesson that the Sun is not the only source of radiant energy.
However, the Sun is the source that provides most of Earth's radiant energy. You
will also read about how electromagnetic waves form, and learn about some
properties of electromagnetic waves.

(Force Fields) If you ever have played with a magnet, you know that it is
surrounded by a field, or area, where the force of the magnet is present. The same
is true for a charged particle, such as an electron. An electric field surrounds
the charged particle.
(Connected Fields) Scientists have found that electric fields and magnetic fields
are related.
(1) A changing electric field produces a magnetic field. (2) A changing magnetic
field produces a changing electric field.
(Force Fields)
P73
(Properties of Electromagnetic Waves)
Electromagnetic waves usually are drawn as a single curve, like the rope in Figure
2. The waves are called transverse because the disturbance is perpendicular to the
direction they travel.
(Wavelength and Frequency) As with all waves, the wavelength and frequency of
electromagnetic waves are related. As shown in Figure 2, wavelength is the distance
between one point on a wave to the nearest point just like it. Frequency is the
number of wavelengths that pass by a point in a certain period of time, such as a
second. As frequency decreases, wavelength increases. You will read in Lesson 2
that electromagnetic waves are grouped according to wavelength and frequency.
What happens when electromagnetic waves move through matter? Suppose you run across
a beach toward a lake or an ocean. You move quickly over the sand, but you slow
down in the water. Electromagnetic waves behave similarly. When they encounter
matter, electromagnetic waves slow down.
P74
(Sources of Electromagnetic Waves ) When you hear the term electromagnetic
radiation, or radiant energy, you might imagine dangerous rays that you should
avoid. It might surprise you to learn, however, that you are a source of
electromagnetic waves! All matter contains charged particles that constantly
vibrate. As a result, all matter- including you produces electromagnetic waves, and
therefore radiant energy. As an object's temperature increases, its particles
vibrate faster. Therefore, the object produces electromagnetic waves with a greater
frequency, or shorter wavelengths.
((The Sun))
Earth's most important energy source is the Sun. The Sum emits energy by giving off
electromagnetic waves. Only a tin amount of these waves reach Earth. The Sun has
many area with different temperatures and produces electromagneti waves with many
different wavelengths. As shown in Figure 3, almost all of the Sun's energy is
carried by three types waves-ultraviolet waves, light waves, and infrared waves.
Light waves are the only type of electromagnetic waves you can see. Infrared waves
have wavelengths longer than light. Ultraviolet waves have wavelengths shorter
than light. You will learn more about the different types of electromagnetic waves
in Lesson 2.
((Other Sources of Electromagnetic Waves)) Even though the Sun is Earth's most
important source of electromagnetic radiation, it is not the only one. All mater
both in space and on Earth, produces electromagnetic waves.
(Sources in Space) If you look up at the night sky, you see the Moon, stars, and
planets. Telescopes on Earth and on satellites above Earth's atmosphere produce
images of radiation emitted by these objects. Some of the radiation is visible, but
most of it is not. Figure 4 shows what radiation emitted by an exploding star might
look like if your eyes could detect it.
P75
(Sources on Earth ) What do a campfire, a lightbulb, and a burner on an electric
stove have in common? They are all hot enough to produce electromagnetic waves that
carry energy you can feel. Look around you right now. Your book, the wall, people,
and everything else you see produce electromagnetic waves, too. Some waves you
detect, but others you do not. Telescopes produce visible images of radiation from
space. Also, special cameras produce visible images of invisible waves on Earth. As
shown in Figure 5, the ultraviolet waves from a flower produce an image very
different from the waves you see with your eyes.
Have you ever seen someone with a terrible sunburn, such as the one shown in Figure
6 ? Some of the Sun's waves have enough energy to damage your skin. The energy of
electromagnetic waves is related to their frequency. Waves that have a higher
frequency, such as ultraviolet waves, have higher energy. Waves that have a lower
frequency, such as light waves and infrared waves, have lower energy. Light from
the girl's flashlight in Figure 6 can never damage her skin because the light waves
do not have enough energy.
The relationship between energy and other wave properties is different for
mechanical waves and electromagnetic waves. The energy of a mechanical wave is
related to its amplitude. A water wave, for example, with a high amplitude has a
lot of energy. The energy of electromagnetic waves is related to their frequency,
not amplitude. As the frequency of an electromagnetic wave increases, the energy of
the wave increases.
((Reading Check ))Why can the Sun's rays cause a burn, but the light from a
flashlight cannot harm your skin?
(Sources on Earth )
P79
Lesson 2
(( The Electromagnetic spectrum ))
The waves that carry voices to your cell phone, the waves of energy that toast your
bread, and the X-rays that a dentist uses to check the health of your teeth are all
electromagnetic waves. The changing motion of an electric charge produces each type
of electromagnetic wave. Each type of wave has a different frequency and
wavelength, and each carries a different amount of energy. Electromagnetic waves
might vibrate from a thousand times a second to trillions of times a second. They
might be as large as a house or as small as an atom's nucleus. The electromagnetic
spectrum is the entire range of electromagnetic waves with different frequencies
and wavelengths.
There are many shades among the familiar colors of a rainbow. Each color gradually
becomes another. However, the electromagnetic spectrum is organized into groups
based on the wavelengths and frequencies of the waves. Like the color of a rainbow,
each group blends into the next. You will read about how electromagnetic waves are
grouped on the nex pages.
Lesson 2
P80
Electromagnetic Spectrum
Figure 7 Electromagnetic waves have a wide range of uses because of their different
wavelengths, frequencies, and energy.
((Visual Check ))Which types of electromagnetic waves have wavelengths too long for
your eyes to see?
P81
4. Light is electromagnetic waves that your eyes can see. You might describe light
as red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet. Red light has the longest
wavelength and the lowest frequency. Violet light has the shortest wavelength and
the highest frequency. Each name represents a family of colors, each with a range
of wavelengths.
P85
Lesson 3
(( Using Electtomagnetic Waves))
How do you use electromagnetic waves?
There are few things you do that do not involve some type of electromagnetic wave.
Think about a typical day. Perhaps a clock radio wakes you in the morning with your
favorite music. You are warm under your blanket because infrared radiation from
your body transforms to thermal energy that is trapped under your blanket. When you
finally crawl out of bed, you turn on a lamp and use light to see which clothes to
wear. These are just a few of the ways you use electromagnetic waves. In this
lesson, you will read about common uses for all types of electromagnetic waves.
Radio Waves
It is probably no surprise to you that radio and television stations use radio
waves to send out signals. Radio waves can pass through many buildings, yet they do
not carry enough energy to harm humans. The wavelengths of radio waves are long
enough to go around many obstacles. They travel through air at the same speed as
all electromagnetic waves.
In the past, it might have taken minutes, hours, or even days for news to travel
from one part of the United States to another. Today, you can watch and listen to
events around the world as they happen! Broadcasting is the use of electromagnetic
waves to send information in all directions. Broadcasting became possible when
scientists learned to use radio waves.
Lesson 3
P86
Radio and Television
How do your radio and television receive information to produce sounds or images? A
radio or TV station uses radio waves to carry information. Each radio and TV
station sends out radio waves at a certain frequency. The station converts sounds
or images into an electric signal. Then, the station produces a carrier wave-an
electromagnetic wave that a radio or television station uses to carry its sound or
image signals. The station modulates, or varies, the carrier wave to match the
electric signal. The signal then gets converted back into images or sounds when it
reaches your radio or television.
Two ways a station might change its carrier wave are shown in Figure 8. Amplitude
modulation (AM) is a change in the amplitude of a carrier wave. Recall that
amplitude is the maximum distance a wave varies from its rest position. Frequency
modulation (FM) is a change in the frequency of a carrier wave. Changes in
frequency match changes in sounds or images.
((Key Concept Check)) How are radio waves used for communication?
((Digital Signals))
The wavelength of an AM carrier wave is typically a lot longer than the wavelength
of an FM carrier wave. This means AM signals can pass around obstacles and travel
farther than FM waves. AM waves are also long enough to reach Earth's upper
atmosphere without scattering. FM waves typically have higher frequencies and more
energy than AM waves. Therefore, FM waves usually produce better sound quality than
AM waves.
Microwaves
You have probably used a microwave oven to heat food. Did you know you also use
microwaves when you watch a television show that uses satellite transmission? Like
radio waves, microwaves are useful for sending and receiving signals However,
microwaves can carry more information than radio waves because their wavelength is
shorter. Microwaves also easily pass through smoke, light rain, snow, and clouds.
Cell Phones
A cell phone company sets up small regions of service calle cells. Each cell has a
base station with antennae, as shown i Figure 10. When you make a call, your phone
sends and receive signals to and from the cell tower. Electric circuits in the bas
station direct your signal to other towers. A signal passes from cell to cell until
it reaches the phone of the person you called
(( Communication Satellites)) Have you seen a sports event or heard a news story
from around the world on your TV? Information about the sounds and the images
probably traveled by microwaves from a satellite to your TV. Some homes have a
satellite dish that receives signals directly from satellites. Satellites send and
receive signals similar to the way antennae on Earth do. A transmitter sends
microwave signals to the satellite. The satellite can pass the signal to other
satellites or send it to another place on Earth.
You can use satellite signals to find directions. The Global Positioning System
(GPS) is a worldwide navigation system that uses satellite signals to determine a
receiver's location. As shown in Figure 11, at least 24 GPS satellites continually
orbit Earth, sending out signals about their orbits and the time. Receivers analyze
this information to calculate their location.
Infrared Waves
You read in Lesson 2 that vibrating molecules in any matter emit infrared waves.
The wavelength of the infrared waves depends on the object's temperature. Hotter
objects emit infrared waves with a greater frequency and shorter wavelength than
cooler objects do. Scientists have developed technology that produces images
showing how much thermal energy a person or thing emits.
P89
Infrared Imaging
Thermal cameras take pictures by detecting infrared waves rather than light waves.
They convert invisible infrared waves, or different temperatures, to different
colors so that your eyes can interpret the information. Medical professionals use
thermal imaging to locate areas of poor circulation in the body. Thermal imaging of
a building can identify areas where excessive thermal energy loss occurs.
Can you see in the dark? Night-vision goggles, such as those in Figure 12, use
infrared waves similar to the way a normal camera uses light. Using the small
amount of infrared light present, the goggles produce enough light that objects can
be seen easily in the dark.
Imaging Earth
Scientists launch satellites that detect and photograph infrared waves coming from
Earth. These infrared images might show variations in vegetation or snowfall. Some
images can even show a fire smoldering in a forest before it bursts into flame. The
thermal image in Figure 13 shows the lava flow from a volcano.
((Reading Check ))What are some ways in which infrared images help humans?
Light
The Sun provides most of Earth's light, but light emitted on Earth also has
important uses. Think about how difficult driving in a city would be without
automobile headlights, street lights, and traffic signals, such as the one in
Figure 14. Without electric lights, homes and businesses would be dark at night.
Televisions, computers, and movie theaters also rely on light. Some forms of
communication rely on light that travels through optical fibers-thin strands of
glass or plastic that transmit a beam of light over long distances.
Ultraviolet Waves
Too much exposure to ultraviolet waves can damage your skin, but these same waves
can also be useful. Certain materials glow when ultraviolet waves strike them. The
materials absorb the energy of the waves and reemit it as light. Credit cards, for
example, have invisible symbols stamped on them using this material. If a store
clerk holds the card under an ultraviolet lamp, the symbol appears. Scientists can
also identify some minerals in rocks by the way they glow under an ultraviolet
lamp.
Ultraviolet waves are also useful for killing germs. Just as your skin can be
damaged by absorbing the energy of ultraviolet waves, germs can also be damaged.
Food manufacturers might use ultraviolet lamps to kill germs in some foods. Campers
might use ultraviolet lamps to purify lake water.
Medical Uses
Ultraviolet light has other medical uses. For example, exposure to ultraviolet
waves can help control or cure certain skin problems, such as psoriasis. Several
times a week, the patient's skin is exposed to ultraviolet light. The waves carry
enough energy to slow the growth of the diseased skin cells.
Another use of ultraviolet waves is shown in Figure 15. The dentist is using
ultraviolet light to harden an adhesive in just a few seconds. Without ultraviolet
light, adhesives might take several minutes to harden.
의료용
P91
Fluorescent Lightbulbs
Lightbulbs like the one shown in Figure 16 use the energy from ultraviolet waves to
produce light. Similar to the way a symbol on a credit card glows under ultraviolet
light, certain chemicals inside the lightbulb glow when they are exposed to
ultraviolet light. When you flip a switch to provide electricity to the bulb, an
electric current flows through a gas inside th bulb. The heated gas emits
ultraviolet light. This light strikes chemical that coats the inside of the bulb.
The chemical absorb the energy of the ultraviolet waves and reemits it as light.
X-Rays
Ultraviolet waves can be dangerous because they can pa through the upper layer of
your skin. X-rays have even mo energy than ultraviolet waves and can pass through
skin an muscle. Although this property makes X-rays dangerous, it al makes them
useful. Two important uses of X-rays are secur and medical imaging.
Have you ever had your luggage scanned at an airport, shown in Figure 17? X-rays
are useful for security scanni because they can pass through many materials, but me
objects block them. Computers can form images of the conte of luggage by measuring
how different materials transmit X-rays.
형광등
You might have had an X-ray taken by a dentist or a doctor, similar to that shown
in Figure 18. X-rays pass through soft parts of your body, but bone stops them.
When X-rays strikes photographic film, the film turns dark. Light parts of the film
show where bone absorbed the X-rays.
A doctor can obtain even more-detailed images using a computed tomography (CT)
scanner. The scanner is an X-ray machine that rotates around a patient, producing a
three- dimensional view of the body.
Gamma Rays
Because of their extremely high energy, gamma rays can be used to destroy diseased
tissue in a patient. Gamma rays can also be used to diagnose medical conditions.
Recall that gamma rays are produced when an atom's nucleus breaks apart or changes.
In a procedure called a positron emission tomography (PET) scan, a detector
monitors the breakdown of a chemical injected into a patient. The chemical is
chosen because it is attracted to diseased parts of the body. The detector can find
the location of the disease by detecting the gamma rays emitted by the chemical.
((Key Concept Check)) What are some medical uses of electromagnetic waves?
