PART 1. GRAMMAR
Comparatives & Superlatives (So sánh hơn và So sánh nhất)
I. So sánh hơn và so sánh nhất với Tính từ và Trạng từ.
Comparatives Superlatives
(So sánh hơn) (So sánh nhất)
Short Adj S + be + ADJ-er + than + O S + be + the + ADJ-est + in/ of...
tính từ ngắn Mary is taller than Henry. Mary is the tallest girl in my class.
Short Adv S + V + ADV-er + than + O/ S + aux S + V + the + ADV-est + in/ of...
trạng từ ngắn Mary runs faster than An (does). Mary runs the fastest of three students.
Long Adj S + be + more ADJ + than + O S + be + the most + ADJ + in/ of... Mary
tính từ dài Mary is more beautiful than An. is the most beautiful girl in my class.
Long Adv S + V + more ADV + than + O/ S + aux S + V + the most + ADV + in/ of...
trạng từ dài He drives more carefully than I do He drives the most carefully of three
boys.
Auxiliary (Aux): trợ động từ gồm “be, do, does, did, have, has, will...”
Chú ý
Những tính từ và trạng từ kết thúc bằng 1 phụ âm, mà ngay trước phụ âm là 1 nguyên âm thì phải
gấp đôi phụ âm, rồi thêm “er” oặc “est“ (big bigger, the biggest)
Những tính từ và trạng từ có 2 âm tiết mà kết thúc bằng đuôi “y” thì được coi là tính từ ngắn, (funny
funnier, the funniest)
Những tính từ và trạng từ có 2 âm tiết mà kết thúc bằng đuôi “y” thì được coi là tính từ ngổn,
Một số tính từ có 2 âm tiết, kết thúc bằng đuôi “le, ow, or, er, et” vừa được coi là tính từ ngắn và
tính từ dài. (gentle, narrow, quiet, clever...) (quiet quieter /more quiet)

• Trước so sánh hơn, ta có thể đặt trạng từ chỉ mức độ để nhấn mạnh: very, pretty, most, rather,
quite, fairly, a bit, a lot, even, far, much, rather.
Examples: Tet is by far the most important holiday in Viet Nam.
Jack does homework much more quickly than Tom.
II. So sánh “kém“ và “kém nhất“ với tính từ Ị trạng từ dài.
So sánh “Kém” So sánh “Kém nhất”
S + be + less + adj + than + O S + be + the least + adj + in / of...
Jane is less beautiful than her sister. Linda is the least beautiful of 3 girls.
S + V + less + adv + than + O / S + aux S + V + the least + adv + in / of...
Huy drives less carefully than his brother (does). Huy drives the least carefully in my group.
III. So sánh hơn và so sánh nhất với danh từ.
Nhiều hơn, ít hơn

less UN (danh từ không đếm được)
fewer Ns
Example: She has more friends than me/I do.
I drank more coffee than her/she did.
I drank less coffee than her/she did.
She has fewer friends than me /I do.
Nhiều nhất, ít nhất
S + V + the most N(s) + than + O/ S + aux
the least UN (danh từ không đếm được)
the fewest Ns
Example: Jane has the most friends of 3 girls.
My father drinks the most coffee in my family.
Jane has the fewest friends of 3 girls.
My mother drinks the least coffee in my family.
Comparison of Equality (So sánh bằng)
I. So sánh bằng với tính từ và trạng từ
S + be + as adj as + O / S + aux S + V + as adv as + O / S + aux
Jane is as beautiful as her sister. Jane is as beautiful as her sister.
Jane isn’t as beautiful as her sister. Jane isn’t as beautiful as her sister.
* Trường hợp phủ định có thể dùng: “not so Adj/Adv as”
II. Diễn đạt sự giống nhau
S + V + the same + N + as + O S + V + the same as + O / S +aux
Linh has the same hair as mine. My hair is the same as yours.
Linh doesn’t have the same hair as mine. He didn’t behave the same as I did.
III. So sánh về số lượng
S + V + as + MANY Ns + as + O/ S + aux
MUCH UN
FEW Ns
LITTLE UN
Examples: I have (don’t have) as many friends as John.
I have (don’t have) as much experience as Lan.
I have (don’t have) as few friends as John.
I have (don’t have) as little experience as Lan.
IV. So sánh chứa bội số
- Muốn chuyển so sánh số lượng sang so sánh chứa bội số, ta thêm bội số vào trước cụm “AS...AS”
- Một Số bội số hay gặp: half (một nửa), twice (gấp đôi), three times (gấp ba)...
S + V + bội số + as + many/ much + (N) + as + O
Examples: This pen costs twice as much as this book.
Fred ate three times as many cookies as Bob.
V. So sánh với “like” (giống như) và “unlike” (không giống như)
S + V + like / unlike + O
Examples: My sister has a T-shirt like mine.
Jane looks like her mother.
My favourite food is unlike Linda’s.
Jane looks unlike her mother.
VI. So sánh với “similar to” (giống)
S + be + similar to + O
Examples: His shirt is similar to mine.
Laura’s appearance isn’t similar to Nick’s.
VII. So sánh với “different from” (khác với)
S + be + different from + O
S + V + (a) different + N + from + O
Examples: My dress is different from yours.
I have a different dress from you.
