PART 1. GRAMMAR
Clause of Concession (Mệnh đề tương phản)
Although: mặc dù
Cấu trúc 1
Although / Though / Even though + S1 + V1, S2 + V2
Example:
Although he has plenty of money, he doesn’t spend much.
= He doesn’t spend much although he has plenty of money.
Chú ý:
Although: dùng trong văn phong trang trọng.
Though: dùng trong vân phong thân một.
Even though: dùng để nhấn mạnh, mang nghĩa “thậm chí”.
“Though” có thể đứng ở cuối câu, tách ra bởi dấu phẩy, mang nghĩa “tuy nhiên”.
Example:
She has a driving licence. She rarely drives, though.

Khi chủ ngữ trong 2 mệnh đề giống nhau (S1 = S2), động từ (V) trong mệnh đề chứa liên từ là “to be”
Có thể lược bỏ “to be” và “ S” trong mệnh đề chứa liên từ.
Although / Though / Even though + S1 + to be + N/ Adj/ PII, S2 + V2
= Although / Though / Even though + N/ Adj/ PII, S2 + V2
Examples:
Although she was a disabled girl, she felt confident in the sport.
= Although a disabled girl, she felt confident in the sport.
Though he was intelligent, he couldn’t find the solutions to this problem.
= Though intelligent, he couldn’t find the solutions to this problem.
He continued keep silent even though he was badly treated.
= He continued keep silent even though badly treated.
Despite / in spite of: mặc dù
Cấu trúc 1
Despite / In spite of + Ving/N, S + V
Examples:
In spite of feeling ill, she came to work.
= She came to work in spite of feeling ill.
Despite her beautiful voice, she never became a singer.
= She never became a singer despite her beautiful voice.

Despite / In spite of + the fact that + S1 + V2, S2 + V2
S1 + V1, despite / in spite of + this, S2 + V2
Example:
Despite the fact that we had an appointment, the man didn’t show up.
= The man didn’t show up despite the fact that we had an appointment.
Laura is poor, despite this, she is happy with her life.
Much as / Much though: mặc dù
Although + S1 + V1, S2 + V2
= Much as / Much though + S1 + V2, S2 + V2
Chú ý: Although = even though = though = much as = much though
Example:
Although I admired him, I couldn’t accept his behavior.
= Much as/much though I admired him, I couldn’t accept his behavior.
But / While / Whereas: tuy nhiên
S1 + V1 + (,) but + S2 + V2
= S1 + V1, while / whereas + S2 + V2
Example:
I like travelling by plane, while /whereas my sister doesn’t.
= I like travelling by plane but my sister doesn’t.
Adj/Adv + as / though: mặc dù (cấu trúc nhấn mạnh)
Although + S1 + V1 + adj / adv, S2 + V2
= Adj/Adv + as/though + S1 + V1, S2 + V2
Examples:
Although she is beautiful, she can’t get married.
= Beautiful as /though she is, she can’t get married.
Although I ran quickly, I couldn’t catch up with her.
= Quickly as /though I ran, I couldn’t catch up with her.
Emphatic form: cấu trúc nhấn mạnh mang nghĩa “mặc dù, cho dù“
Although + S1 + V1, S2 + V2
= V(bare infinitive) + as + S1 + auxiliary, S2 + V2
Example:
Although he tried, he didn’t succeed.
= Try as he did, he didn’t succeed.
No matter...: mặc dù..., cho dù... thế nào đi nữa

No matter how + adj/ adv + S + V
= However + adj/ adv + S + V
Examples:
However hard she tries, she never manages to finish her work on time.
= No matter how hard she tries, she never manages to finish her work on time.
However intelligent he is, he can’t solve this matter.
= No matter how intelligent he is, he can’t solve this matter.

No matter what + S + V
= Whatever+ S + V
Example:
Whatever he says, nobody believes him anymore.
= No matter what he says, nobody believes him anymore.
Example:
As a result of his repeated mistakes, he lost his job.

S + V + as a result of/ as a consequence of + Ving / N: là kết quả, hậu quả của ...
Example:
He lost his job as a result of his repeated mistakes.
Sự phối hợp giữa động từ trong mệnh đề chính và mệnh đề trạng ngữ chỉ thời gian:
WHEN (khi)
QKĐ when QKĐ The light turned on when I came into the room.
TLĐ/HTĐ when QKĐ I’ll phone you when I arrive at the airport.
QKTD when QKĐ Jane was talking on the phone when I arrived.
QKHT when QKĐ Tony had already eaten dinner when she called.
NO SOONER...THAN / HARDLY...WHEN
No sooner + had + S + PII + than S + Vpast No sooner had I arrived home than Jack called
me.
Hardly + had + S + PII + than S + Vpast Hardly had I arrived home when Jack called me.
