HONOR OUR PARENTS
The command “Honor your father and mother” often appears in the Bible ( Exodus 20:12; Deuteronomy 5:16; Matthew 15:4; Ephesians
6:2, 3 ). To obey him, we have to do the following:
Appreciate them: We honor our father and mother when we appreciate everything they have done for us. And we show that we value
them by considering their advice ( Proverbs 7:1, 2; 23:26 ). The Bible says that “the beauty of children is their parents,” meaning that
children should be proud of them ( Proverbs 17:6 ). Accept their authority: Young people, especially, honor their parents by respecting the
authority God has given them. Colossians 3:20 tells them, “Children, be obedient to your parents in everything, for this is very pleasing in
the Lord.” Jesus himself gladly obeyed his parents when he was young ( Luke 2:51 ).

2. Treat them with respect: ( Leviticus 19:3; Hebrews 12:9 ). Respect is usually seen in what we say and how we say it. It is true that
sometimes some parents do not behave properly, and their children may find it difficult to respect them. Even in these circumstances, 2
children can show them honor by avoiding speaking to them or treating them disrespectfully ( Proverbs 30:17 ). The Bible says that if
someone speaks disrespectfully about his father or mother, he is committing a serious offense ( Matthew 15:4 ).
The following questions are asked orally:
- What does it mean to honor our parents?
- Do you comply with this commandment? Because?
- What do you do to fulfill this commandment?
Students use the key to fill in the blanks, when they finish they will know the reward God gives us if we honor our
parents:
Students look at the following images and write how these children honor their parents:
