The Episcopal Conferences have constituted a true testimony of the journey of the Church in Latin America.
The five documents of the Latin American Magisterium resulting from the General Conferences, within a common
framework of renewal and continuity, have peculiar characteristics.

1.- RIO DE JANEIRO (Brazil 1955).

The I General Conference of the Latin American Episcopate was convened by Pope Pius XII. It was held in the city of
Rio de Janeiro from July 25 to August 4, 1955. The Conference had the manifest desire to strengthen faith in Latin
America while promoting renewed evangelization.

The first objective of the Rio de Janeiro Conference was to reflect on the shortage of “apostolic forces”, especially
priests, on the Continent, which made the pastoral task of the Church difficult. Among these, the main concern is the
advance of Protestantism and the attacks coming from Freemasonry. (Masonry is committed to the constant
improvement of man and society through the practice of love, solidarity, tolerance, justice and peace, all for the Glory of
the Great Architect of the Universe.)
The Conference addressed with special care the problem of missions among Indians, blacks and peasants, (Cfr. No.
26,27,39), as well as the media (Title VI), immigrants (Title X), education and culture.

2.- MEDELLÍN CONFERENCE (Colombia -1968).

The Second General Conference was convened by Pope Paul VI and later inaugurated personally by him in August
1968. It met from August 26 to September 6. The topic of reflection chosen for the Conference was: Presence of the
Church in the current transformation of Latin America, in light of the Second Vatican Council.
The situation on the Continent was far from calm. These are the years of Eduardo Frei's “revolution in freedom” in Chile,
of the triumph of the Cuban Revolution, of the first military coups (Brazil, 1964), of the Vietnam War (1968), of the French
May and of the failure of the Alliance for Progress of the US government. At a more internal level, the Latin American
Church faced tension among conservatives who resisted conciliar renewal.

Its main contributions are the following:

• Denouncement of poverty and “institutionalized violence.” Human promotion: justice, peace, family, education.
• Evangelization and growth in faith.
• Points out the limits of a transformation of reality. If social and political changes are not accompanied by a conversion
of heart and a change of mentality, true liberation will never be achieved.
• Welcome and legitimation of the Base Ecclesiastical Communities (CEB) as “the initial cell of ecclesiastical structuring.”

3.- PUEBLA CONFERENCE. (Pueblo de los Ángeles, Mexico)

Eleven years later the Latin American Bishops met again in the Third General Conference. This time
the chosen city was Puebla de los Ángeles, Mexico. From January 28 to February 13, 1979, Bishops
from all over Latin America met with an important representation of priests, men and women religious,
and lay people, to reflect on the topic: Evangelization in the present and future of Latin America.
The Puebla Conference, convened under the motto “Evangelization in the present and future of Latin
America,” would face a different reality from that of Medellín, more painful and extreme. The continent
has been subjected to military dictatorships. Along with this, the commitment of Christians in the
political arena had intensified, many of them being among the victims of the dictatorial governments of the time, whose
most notable figure is Bishop Oscar Romero of El Salvador, murdered while celebrating mass.
The main contributions of Puebla were the following:
• Renewed denunciation against institutionalized violence on the continent, in the form of military dictatorships and
generalized poverty.
• Calling Christians to commit themselves to the poor and oppressed, seeing in them the face of Christ
• The demand for respect and promotion of human rights.
• Evangelization must promote the development and integral liberation of the peoples of Latin America, through the
message and liberating action of Jesus Christ.
• Guidelines for a correct “liberation theology”.
• The preferential option for the poor and the young, following the spirit of Medellín, as a commitment and guide for the
life of the entire Latin American Church.

Puebla's contribution helped consolidate the steps taken since Medellín and strengthen the role of the laity and the
CEBs along with confirming the social and political commitment of Christians, as inevitable demands of their Christian
faith.

4.- SANTO DOMINGO CONFERENCE: Dominican Republic (1992).

On October 12, 1992, 13 years after Puebla and 500 after the arrival of faith on the continent, Pope
John Paul II inaugurated the IV General Conference of the Latin American Episcopate in Santo
Domingo, capital of the Dominican Republic. The occasion and place had a clear intention: to celebrate
the V Centenary of the beginning of evangelization and to promote a new evangelization from there.

Its main contributions are the following:

• Renewal of the option for the poor and young people for the entire Latin American Church.
• Valuation of cultures in the evangelization process. Call to the inculturation of the Gospel and a “new
evangelization.”
• Values the commitment to human advancement, preferring this concept to “liberation.”
• Concern for the indigenous problem and the reality of young people.
• Criticism of the consumer society and capitalism.
• Interest in the ecological and the environment.

5.- LA APARECIDA: (Aparecida Sanctuary – Brazil).

It takes place from Sunday May 13 to 31, 2007 at the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Aparecida in Brazil.
The fifth episcopal conference addresses 3 issues of the Catholic Church in Latin America and the Caribbean:

* First “We look at our People in the light of the Father's Project”: The church is concerned about how the American
people are being affected by the phenomena of globalization, economic and scientific factors. Also com. Families are
entering a crisis and we are given the importance they have for society, we have to see the role of the church.

*Second: “Jesus Christ, source of dignified and full life”: This refers to the fact that we have to keep in mind that Jesus
Christ is a source of new life, but in the life of the missionary, we must continue to announce that Jesus is the new life to
the whole world and its people. teachings.

*Third: “The spirit drives us to be disciples and missionaries”: This chapter talks about the crisis that families in Latin
America are suffering and that we have to rebuild the kingdom of God from the personal, family, social and cultural
sphere.
