2. MALFUNCTION CODE
2.1 Display procedure
• The machine's CPU performs a self-diagnostics function that, on detecting a malfunction, gives the corresponding malfunction code and
maintenance call mark on the Service Mode.
• Touching the maintenance call mark will display the corresponding malfunction code on the state confirm screen.

2.2 List of the malfunction code


• If an image stabilization or scanner fault occurs, the corresponding malfunction code appears.

2.3 S-1
2.3.1 Contents
Malfunction type CCD gain adjustment failure
Malfunction code S-1
Description timing It is detected that the CCD clamp gain adjustment value is faulty.
Relevant parts • LED exposure unit (LA201)
• Scanner drive board (SCDB)
• CCD board (CCDB)
• MFP board (MFPB)

2.3.2 Procedure
1. Correct the harness connection between CCDB and MFPB if faulty.
2. Check for possible extraneous light and correct as necessary.
3. Clean the lens, mirrors, CCD surface, and shading sheet if dirty.
4. Correct reflective mirror of the scanner if faulty, or change scanner mirror.
5. Replace CCD sensor unit.
6. Replace SCDB.
7. Replace MFPB.

2.4 S-2
2.4.1 Contents
Malfunction type CIS gain adjustment failure
Malfunction code S-2
Description timing It is detected that the CIS clamp gain adjustment value is faulty.
Relevant parts • CIS module (CIS)
• Dual scan image processing board (DSIPB)
• MFP board (MFPB)

2.4.2 Procedure
1. Correct the harness connection between CIS and DSIPB if faulty.
2. Correct the harness connection between DSIPB and MFPB if faulty.
3. Check for possible extraneous light and correct as necessary.
4. Wipe clean the back side scanning glass surface and shading sheet.
5. Replace CIS.
6. Replace DSIPB.
7. Replace MFPB.

2.5 D-1
2.5.1 Contents
Malfunction type Split line detect (Front side)
Malfunction code D-1
Description timing • While recovering from the power save mode or when the main power switch is ON, it detects whether or
not stain exist at the DF original glass when the DF is closed.
This warning will be displayed if the original is set to DF when stain exist.
• The thin line detection level and the warning display can be changed by the following setting.
[Service Mode] -> [System 2] -> [ADF Scan Glass Contamin. Set. ] -> [Front Side]
Relevant parts • Front side cleaning motor (M8)
• Front side cleaning sensor (PS18)
• DF control board (DFCB)

2.5.2 Procedure
1. Wipe clean the glass surface of the DF original glass.
2. Check the front side glass cleaning roller unit for proper installation and correct if necessary.
Clean the front side glass cleaning roller unit if dirty.
3. Select [Service Mode] -> [System 2] -> [ADF Scan Glass Contamin. Set.] -> [Front Side], and change the setting.
4. Check the DFCB connector for proper connection and correct as necessary.
5. M8 operation check.
6. Replace front side glass cleaning roller unit.
7. Replace DFCB.

2.6.1 Contents
Malfunction type Split line detect (Back side)
Malfunction code D-3
Description timing • When the main power switch is turned ON or when the machine is recovering from the power save mode, if
the DF is closed, the machine detects whether stain exists in the back side original scanning section (CIS).
This warning will be displayed if the original is set to DF when stain exist.
• The thin line detection level and the warning display can be changed by the following setting.
[Service Mode] -> [System 2] -> [ADF Scan Glass Contamin. Set.] -> [Back Side]

• DF power supply (DFPU)
• Dual scan image processing board (DSIPB)

2.6.2 Procedure
1. Wipe clean the CIS glass surface.
2. Check the front side glass cleaning roller unit for proper installation and correct if necessary.
Clean the front side glass cleaning roller unit if dirty.
3. If there is a problem in the CIS module connection, correct the faulty connection.
4. Replace CIS.
5. Replace DFPU.
6. Replace DSIPB.

2.7.1 Contents

Malfunction code P-5, P-28


Description timing • When adjusting the IDC sensor, output voltage detected for all eight sample patterns are 4.3 V or more.
• When adjustment is complete, sensor's output voltage with selected light intensity is 1.0 V or under.
• During image stabilization (gamma correction control), detected output value for IDC sensor did not go
below threshold (half the value of what is detected by IDC sensor on the belt surface) for three consecutive
times (position of the pattern end is not detected).
• During image stabilization (gamma correction control), sensor's output value of each color for hyper 0
gradation after the primary approximation is half the detection level on the belt surface or under

2.7.2 Procedure
1. Wipe clean the surface of the transfer belt with a soft cloth, if it is dirty.
2. Change the image transfer belt unit if the transfer belt is damaged.
3. Reinstall or reconnect IDCS/Fr or IDCS/Rr, sensor shutter or connector, if it is installed or connected improperly.
4. Clean IDCS/Fr or IDCS/Rr if it is dirty.
5. Check the HV1 connector for proper connection and correct as necessary.
6. Open/close the front door, run an image stabilization sequence, and select [State Confirmation] -> [Level History 1] to check the IDC value.
IDC1: IDCS/Fr, IDC2: IDCS/Rr
If the value is 1.0 V or less, replace IDCS/Fr or IDCS/Rr.
7. Check the conduction of PRCB ICP20 or ICP21.
8. Replace PRCB.

2.8 P-6, P-7, P-8, P-9


2.8.1 Contents
Malfunction type • Cyan imaging unit failure

Description timing • All density readings taken from the density pattern produced on the transfer belt are 5.0 g/m2 (IDC sensor
photo receiver output) and more during max. density adjustment (Vg/Vdc adjustment).
• All density readings taken from the density pattern produced on the transfer belt are 1.0 g/m2 (IDC sensor
photo receiver output) or less during max. density adjustment (Vg/Vdc adjustment).

2.8.2 Procedure
1. Select [Imaging Process Adjustment] -> [Max Image Density Adj] and, if the setting value is negative, readjust.
2. Check the drive transmission portion of the Imaging Unit and correct as necessary.
3. Clean the IDC sensor/Fr (IDCS/Fr) or IDC sensor/Rr (IDCS/Rr) window if dirty.
4. Clean the contact of the imaging unit connector if dirty.
5. Check the HV1 connector for proper connection and correct as necessary.
6. Replace the imaging unit.
7. Replace the drum unit/K or developing unit/K.
8. Replace the transfer belt unit.
9. Replace HV1.
10. Check the conduction of PRCB ICP20 or ICP21.
11. Replace PRCB.

2.9.1 Contents
Malfunction type Skew correction trouble
Malfunction code P-14
Description timing The difference between the skew default position setting value and the cumulative amount of skew
adjustment values goes over the predetermined value.

2.9.2 Procedure
1. Check the drive transmission portion of the Imaging Unit and correct as necessary.
2. Clean the contact of the imaging unit connector if dirty.
3. Reinstall or reconnect IDCS/Fr or IDCS/Rr, sensor shutter or connector, if it is installed or connected improperly.
4. Clean IDCS/Fr or IDCS/Rr if it is dirty.
5. Replace IDCS/Fr or IDCS/Rr.
6. Replace the imaging unit.
7. Replace the drum unit/K.
8. Replace PH unit.
9. Check the conduction of PHRYB ICP3.
10. Replace PHRYB.
11. Check the conduction of PRCB ICP20 or ICP21.
12. Replace PRCB.
NOTE
• After the PH unit is replaced, reset the skew default position for each color. Touch keys as follows for this setting.
[Service Mode] -> [Machine] -> [Print Head Skew Adj.] -> [Print Head Skew Adj.]
• When this alert code is displayed, according to the list, take actions to address the problem. After the problem is resolved, select
[Service Mode] -> [Machine] -> [Print Head Skew Adj.] -> [Print Head Skew reset] and perform the skew adjustment reset.

2.10 P-16, P-18


2.10.1 Contents
Malfunction type • PC charge cleaning trouble 1 <P-16>
• PC charge cleaning trouble 2 <P-18>
Malfunction code P-16, P-18
Description timing <P-16> Charging cleaner home sensor is not transmitted even after the specified time has passed
while the charging cleaner material or serrate electrode material is moving forward.
<P-18> Charging cleaner return sensor is not interrupted even after the specified time has passed
when the charging cleaner material or serrate electrode material is moving forward.
* Under the situation above occurs, control will be switched to the return operation after the
warning is given. When the charging cleaner home sensor is not interrupted after the specified
time has passed during the return operation, trouble code C-2101 will be given.

2.10.2 Procedure
1. PS43 I/O check, sensor check.

2.11 P-21
2.11.1 Contents
Malfunction type Color regist test pattern failure
Malfunction code P-21
Description timing • In pre-pattern detection, the pre-pattern edges (the start and end points of an effective area) are not found
within the pre-pattern search area.
• In main scan direction and sub scan direction registration pattern detection, the registration pattern edges
(the start and end points of an effective area) is not found within the pattern search area of each unit.

2.11.2 Procedure
1. Wipe clean the surface of the transfer belt with a soft cloth, if it is dirty.
2. Change the image transfer belt unit if the transfer belt is damaged.
3. Replace the PH unit.
4. Check the conduction of PHRYB ICP3.
5. Replace PHRYB.
6. Check the conduction of PRCB ICP20 or ICP21.

7. Replace PRCB.

2.12 P-22
2.12.1 Contents
Malfunction type Color regist adjust failure
Malfunction code P-22
Description timing • The difference between the maximum and minimum amounts of color shift among the values (amounts of
color shift before they are averaged) obtained from each unit exceeds the specified value.
• The average amount of color shift on the test pattern exceeds the specified value.
• If the final amount of color shift obtained after image stabilization exceeds the specified value, this is
judged as error even when the average amount of color shift is normal.

2.12.2 Procedure
1. Slide out the imaging unit and reinstall it in position.
2. Reinstall or reconnect IDCS/Fr or IDCS/Rr if it is installed or connected improperly.
3. Check the vertical transport guide for installed position and correct as necessary.
4. Check the conduction of PRCB ICP20 or ICP21.
5. Replace PRCB.

2.13 P-27
2.13.1 Contents
Malfunction type Secondary transfer ATVC failure
Malfunction code P-27
Description timing An abnormal average value is detected during an adjustment of the second image transfer ATVC value.

• Image transfer entrance guide
• 2nd image transfer assy
• Transfer belt unit

2.13.2 Procedure
1. Check the contact between the roller opposed to the 2nd transfer roller in the transfer belt unit and the grounding terminal. Clean the joint or
correct if necessary.
2. Check the image transfer entrance guide for proper installation and correct if necessary.
3. Check that the spring does not come off during the pressure operation of the 2nd transfer roller and correct if necessary.
4. Check the contact at the joint of the 2nd image transfer assy and HV2. Clean the joint or correct if necessary.
5. Replace the transfer belt unit.
6. Replace HV2.
7. Check the conduction of PRCB ICP20.
8. Replace PRCB.

2.14 P-31
2.14.1 Contents
Malfunction type Encoder sensor malfunction
Malfunction code P-31
Description timing While the PC motor/K is rotating at a stable pace and lock signals are in an active (LOW=0) condition, an
abnormal encoder pulse width continues to be detected over the predetermined period of time.
Relevant parts • Encoder sensor/K1 (PC45)
• Encoder sensor/K2 (PC46)
• Transport drive assy
• Printer control board (PRCB)

2.14.2 Procedure
1. Perform the faulty sensor check procedure. *
2. Check the sensor, for which a faulty condition has been checked, for installed position and proper connector connection.
3. Wipe the sensor, for which a faulty condition has been checked, clean of dirt if any.
4. If P-31 persists, change the transport drive assy.
5. Check the conduction of PRCB ICP18.
6. Replace PRCB.
• *: Faulty sensor check procedure
1. Open the lower front door and turn ON the main power switch of the machine.
2. Call the [Sensor Check] screen to the screen by way of Service Mode.
For details how to display, see "Adjustment /Setting."
3. Close the lower front door and start [Stabilizer].

4. During the stabilizer sequence, check to see if the values of the phase detection sensors (encoder sensor/K1 and encoder sensor/K2)
change.
5. A sensor is faulty if its value does not change.

2.15 P-32
2.15.1 Contents
Malfunction type Heating roller temperature sensor temperature detection failure
Malfunction code P-32
Description timing • During warm up, the temperature detected by the heating roller thermistor/1 exceeded the warm up
complete temperature of the heating roller for over the predetermined value, and stayed for a
predetermined period of time.
• When the predetermined period of time had passed after the warm up became complete, detected
temperature of the heating roller thermistor/1 exceeded the temperature detected by the heating roller
temperature sensor for over the predetermined value for more than the predetermined period of time.
• While printing, temperature detected by the heating roller thermistor/1 exceeded the temperature detected
by the heating roller temperature sensor for more than the predetermined value for a predetermined period
of time.
• This warning indicates that condensation or dirt on the heating roller temperature sensor was detected, and
the alternate temperature control is being conducted.
With condensation, the warning is cleared when the condensation is detected to be removed. When the dirt
on the sensor is detected, it is considered as a failure and the trouble code C-392A is issued.

• Heating roller temperature sensor (TEMS2)

2.15.2 Procedure
1. Wipe the TEMS2 clean of dirt if any.
• <Cleaning procedure>
• Clear away a dirt or a foreign object on the sensor with a cotton swab.
• When a dirt is left even if you cleaned the sensor by above procedure, clear away a dirt or a foreign object on the sensor using a
cotton swab dampened with the alcohol.
And, wipe off the sensor with a dry cotton swab afterwards.
2. Check the connection of the fusing unit.
3. Replace the fusing unit.
