PROJECT: MATHEMATICAL OLYMPIADS

Virginia Sapp Evangelical Institute

Responsible: Alvaro Mejía.

ABOUT THE OLYMPICS

It is a fact that the Olympics have existed for several decades in different areas
(national and international). In the 19th century, the Olympics began in European
countries. Romania hosted the first International Mathematics Olympiad (IMO 1959).
In 1989, UNESCO requested that extracurricular activities such as Olympics be
promoted and encouraged at the regional, municipal, national and international levels
in science and mathematics, with the purpose of seeking and supporting talent and
scientific initiative among students.

GENERAL OBJECTIVES

a) Contribute to the development of mathematical skills of the students of the Virginia

Sapp Evangelical Institute, thus improving their academic performance and
preparation for the departmental and/or national Olympiads.

b) Generate a space that allows the dissemination, socialization and enjoyment of

mathematics for students of the Virginia Sapp Evangelical Institute.

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES

a) Provide students with tools that allow them to solve non-routine mathematical
problems.
b) Allow the students of the Virginia Sapp Evangelical Institute to discover their
abilities taking into account a real context with mathematical work.
c) Motivate the student community to participate in this type of activities as a space
for training and personal growth.

JUSTIFICATION
Mathematics is one of the most important sciences that helps students achieve a
comprehensive education, since it promotes not only numerical reasoning and spatial
location, but also develops other thinking skills, allowing students to become critical
people. . Likewise, it contributes to the development of the ability to understand.

The fundamental mission of the Mathematics class at the Virginia Sapp Evangelical
Institute is to contribute to the Christ-centered formation of the student, promoting
learning experiences that contribute to the development of mathematical reasoning
for solving problems and making decisions in daily life. Learning mathematics must
provide models that facilitate the understanding and solution of problems of a
quantitative and spatial nature. In addition, it serves as a link for the development of
thinking skills from a critical and creative perspective.

The mathematical olympiads become a strategy that goes beyond the formulation of
repetitive exercises. Each problem formulated in its context should and can open the
possibility for the student to reflect on his learning, from this reflection he activates
his way of reasoning, conjecturing, checking and exemplifying activities typical of
understanding.

The mathematical Olympiads are aimed at enhancing the development of thinking in

the students of the Virginia Sapp Evangelical Institute, an aspect that is in tune with
the educational policies of the educational institution and therefore with the demands
of the era of knowledge.

To conclude, it is important to affirm that the Olympics are more than just a
competition. On the one hand, they serve to promote mathematics and provide it with
playful content that has unfortunately been lost for various reasons; On the other
hand, the Olympics contribute to the discovery of mathematical talents that we have
not yet detected.

FORMS OF PARTICIPATION
All students who are interested in participating in the Mathematics Olympiads may do
so. An internal eliminatory round will be held that will give a winner for each level.

There will be 3 levels of participation like this:

Level 1: Sixth and Seventh grade.

Level 2: Eighth and Ninth grade.

Level 3: Tenth and Eleventh grade.

This delegation will represent the institution at the municipal level.

EXPECTED RESULTS

Enter the 2013 Mathematics Olympiads at the municipal level, obtaining good results.

Constitute a group of young people to represent the institution in the call for Olympics
at the municipal level.

Constitute a group of young people to represent the institution in the next National
Mathematics Olympiad will be held in the City of Choluteca, October 18, 19 and 20,
2013.

PROPOSED TUTORIAL SCHEDULE

Level 1: Sixth and Seventh grade on Mondays of each week.

Level 2: Eighth and Ninth grades on Tuesdays of each week.

Level 3: Tenth and Eleventh grade on Wednesdays of each week.

All at 2:30 pm to 4:00 p.m.

METHODOLOGY
The tutorials that prepare students to take the internal mathematics olympiad at the
Virginia Sapp Evangelical Institute will be organized as follows:

They will consist of solving problems typical of mathematical olympiads, using a

constructivist approach that encourages the active participation of students.

To select the students who will represent the Virginia Sapp Evangelical Institute, a
qualifying test will be held on March 15, in which twenty students from each level will
be selected, based on the performance demonstrated in the tests. These selected
students will represent the institution in the departmental Mathematics Olympiads,
held at the Francisco Morazá n National Pedagogical University, for which they will be
preparing from March 18 every week until the date for the Departmental Olympiad is
established, organizing in the following way:

Level 1: Sixth and Seventh grade on Mondays of each week.

Level 2: Eighth and Ninth grades on Tuesdays of each week.

Level 3: Tenth and Eleventh grade on Wednesdays of each week.

All at 2:30 pm to 4:00 p.m.

Once the Departmental Olympiad has been held, and We look forward with
enthusiasm to having brilliant students who have qualified for the National
Mathematics Olympiad that will take place in the city of Choluteca, October 18, 19 and
20, 2103. These students will continue training, completing at least 3 hours per week
of tutorials.
