Gender equality – journey of gender equality in the philippines

In the video the woman is the protagonist. There are stereotypical (old) characterizations of women in
the story. In Spanish era, women were turned into objects of suppression. The characteristics of women
according to Spaniards are obedient and respectful daughter and a good wife and a mother. Spaniards
believe that women should only stay at home and they introduce the image of women as maria clara
(mahinhing dalaga). Women can no longer loiter around, run along the meadows, swim in the rivers or
climb the trees. Women are no longer allowed to hold high positions and participate in any political
activities. They are not allowed to express their thoughts.

These characters often reinforce the idea that men are superior to women and should have greater
power and control. In conclusion, attitudes towards gender equality in Philippine media are complex
and multifaceted.

The Philippines has made significant progress in promoting gender equality in recent years, particularly
in terms of women's participation in politics, education, and the workforce. However, patriarchal
attitudes and gender-based discrimination continue to exist in society. The views of society towards
characters who embody gender equality in literature and media can also vary. Some people may see
these characters as inspiring and progressive, while others may view them as threatening to traditional
gender roles and values. On the other hand, characters who perpetuate gender stereotypes and
discrimination may be seen as reinforcing traditional gender roles and values by some members of
society, while others may view them as harmful and regressive..

in general, gender roles in the Philippines have traditionally been defined in a way that places men in
positions of power and authority, while women are expected to be submissive and nurturing. In the
Philippines, there is a clear divide between the traditional roles of men and women. Men are typically
seen as the primary breadwinners and decision-makers in the family, while women are expected to take
care of the household and children. This division of labor has been entrenched in Filipino culture for
generations and is reflected in media, literature, and other forms of popular culture. However, over the
years, the country has made significant progress towards achieving gender equality and challenging
traditional gender roles. Women are increasingly represented in the workforce and are taking on roles
that have historically been reserved for men. Women are also becoming more involved in politics and
are advocating for their rights and gender equality. In media and literature, there is a growing trend
towards promoting gender equality and challenging traditional gender roles. Female characters are
being portrayed as strong and independent, and there is a push towards more diversity and inclusivity in
storytelling. Overall, the journey towards gender equality in the Philippines has involved challenging
traditional gender roles and promoting equal opportunities for both men and women.
