Test 2, 15st June 2023, 12.00-1.00 pm

Question 1 [15 Marks]

Figure Q1 shows a speed control system with current/torque control loop. The 𝜔𝑟𝑒𝑓 , 𝐾𝑇 , 𝐽𝑇 , 𝐵 and 𝐾𝑔
are respectively the reference speed signal, torque constant, total inertia referred to the motor, viscous
friction and sensor gain. 𝐺𝑠 (𝑠) is the speed controller. The open loop transfer function (OLTF) of
the current control system is given as
1⁄
𝑜𝑢𝑡𝑝𝑢𝑡 1 + 𝑇1 𝑠 𝑅𝑎 1
= x =
𝑖𝑛𝑝𝑢𝑡 𝑇2 𝑠 1 + 𝑠𝑇𝑎 𝑇𝑖 𝑠
where the 𝑇1 and 𝑇2 are the designed time constant for current controller. 𝑅𝑎 , 𝑇𝑎 and 𝑇𝑖 are the
armature resistance, electrical time constant for the armature circuit, and time constant for the
current control loop.

Question 2 [15 Marks]
Figure Q2 shows a two quadrant converter used to drive a DC motor. This converter allows
DC motor to operate in quadrant 1 and quadrant 2. Forward driving and forward braking are
obtained through this converter. In Figure Q2(a), 𝐼𝑆 and 𝐼𝑎 are the supply current and
armature current. In Figure Q2(b), the D, 𝑇𝑆 , 𝑇𝑜𝑛 and 𝑇𝑜𝑓𝑓 are variable duty cycle, the period of
𝑁𝑚
switching, The turn-on and turn-off times respectively. The torque constant is 𝐾𝑇 = 1.966 𝐴
.

Figure Q2 : (a) Two quadrant converter circuit and (b) the switching of T1 and T2.

a) State an advantage of this converter in driving a DC motor compare to 1-quadrant

converter.

b) Redraw the Figure Q2(a) and show the flow of armature current Ia during turn-on Ton and
turn-off Toff times (note: Ia flows in positive and negative direction in each Ton and Toff
time).

A 1-Q PWM DC-DC converter with Vs = 200V drives a separately excited dc motor. The
motor armature resistance and inductance are 0.33  and 11 mH respectively. With a duty
cycle of D = 1, the motor runs at 1200 rev/min when the armature current is 20 A. The load
torque remaining constant and the converter switching frequency is 500 Hz.

a) If the speed is to be reduced to 800 rpm, calculate the necessary duty cycle.
