Introduction
The highway is the biggest support for the excellence transportation. The
highway is constructed in complicated climatic and engineering-geological
conditions. Roads make it easy for people to do transportation. This is because the
road has transformed the once rocky village road into a wide paved road. The
majority of the community feels a great benefit from the existing highways in
their area. However, this highway is like two sides of a blade. One side provides
benefits with ease of transportation while on the other hand it gives a loss that is a
traffic accident. Traffic accidents can be caused by various things. One of them
being a public conversation is a potholes and bumpy highway, the main problem
on the road that is very difficult to solve.
Denpasar City which is the capital of the Province of Bali in fact does not
escape from this problem. Based on data collected from the Department of Public
Works and Spatial Planning the total length of roads in the city of Denpasar
reaches 489 km. 16 percent or around 75 km of the total is in a dominant hollow
and undamaged condition that occurs in the areas of West Denpasar and South
Denpasar. If seen in the scope of the province, the influence of the causes of
traffic accidents on the provincial road segments in the province of Bali is the
largest pavement in mildly damaged conditions by 53% (Agung Yana & Indriani,
2010). This problem is often considered trivial, but the impact is huge and can
even cause death.
Methods
In writing this scientific paper using two methods. The first method is the
study of literature by conducting studies through reading journals, scientific
articles, and official government websites. Literature study is a very important
method in scientific research because it can prioritize certain variables (Souza,
Mello, & Marx, 2019). The second method is an observation through direct
observation to the field. Structured observation is a qualitative research
methodology that has been used by the social sciences for several years (J Glazier,
2019). Observations were made on 4th September 2019 around Waturenggong and
P.B. Sudirman Denpasar Street. Observations are very important in order to be
2

able to see firsthand the actual conditions that occur in the field, not only see by
picture in the report.
Results
Damaged roads (potholes or bumpy) can increase the risk of traffic
accidents (Oktegianda, Kurniawan, & Suroto, 2019). This is because motorists in
particular sometimes do not pay attention to the details of the road being
traversed. If the premotor rides a motorbike at a high speed and passes through
holes or bumpy roads, the rider may fall. If there are other vehicles near the
incident, it is not impossible that the driver was hit or run over which could cause
death.
Through observations on Waturenggong and P.B. Sudirman Denpasar
Street, it was found that there are several bumpy roads and light holes.
Motorcyclists often reduce speed suddenly when they want to pass that part of the
road. This is very dangerous for these motorists and other motorists.
Conclusion
Based on the results of the study it can be concluded that potholes and
bumpy roads can increase the risk of traffic accidents. It needs more attention
from the government in particular. Drivers must have the rights to drive safely and
comfortably.
