12 ENGLISH TENSES

(Simple, Continuous, Perfect, Perfect Continuous)

PRESENT

 Simple Present – I walk every day. (present time)


 Present Continuous – I am walking right now. (continuous: -ing) (use of auxiliary verbs: am,
is, are, was, were …)
 Present Perfect – I have walked recently. (perfect: has, have, had(past))
 Present Perfect Continuous – I have been walking for three hours. (present time, use of
has/have/had, use of -ing)

PAST

 Simple Past – I walked last night. (past time)


 Past Continuous – I was walking last night.
 Past Perfect – I had walked before I slept. (use of the word: had)
 Past Perfect Continuous – I had been walking when the guest arrived.

FUTURE

 Simple Future – I will walk tomorrow. (use of the word: will)


 Future Continuous – I will be walking tomorrow. (use of: will, -ing)
 Future Perfect – I will have walked by 8 o’clock tonight. (use of: will, have, -ed)
 Future Perfect Continuous – I will have been walking when you arrive tomorrow. (use of:
will, have, -ing)
