Introduction
 States have created international organizations (IO’s) to
contributing to the solution of cross-national problems,
 It also help to provide rules and structures to manage
inter-state interaction.
 Further, IO’s serve as venues in which learning processes
can occur and expectations about norms of international
interaction can be created and reinforced.
 A more sanguine view of international organizations sees
them as merely another venue in which states pursue
their national interests.

 This course will explore and analyze a number of approaches to
understanding IO’s.
 The study of international organizations includes the exploration
of formal international organizations (the United Nations),
 Treaty organizations (the North Atlantic Treaty Organization,
NATO),
 regional organizations (the European Union, EU, and the
Association of Southeast Asian Nations, ASEAN),
 international non-governmental organizations (INGOs), like
Amnesty International, Int. Chamber of Commerce, ICRC
etc.

 From this course we will understand the evolution of international
organizations as well as their roles, processes, and functions in the
contemporary world.
 We may explore several organizations in greater depth and analyze how
international and regional organizations are meeting the challenges posed by
globalization and changing global power alignments.

 In this course, we will acquire foundational knowledge in


the subfield of International Relations.
 will develop our abilities to find information and apply it
effectively.
 will demonstrate the ability to express our ideas, both in
writing and in oral presentation.
 will develop our understanding of the variety of global
organizations which exist, including inter-governmental,
international non-governmental, universal, regional,
multi-purpose, and single purpose.
Topics:

 Students can choose from one of the topics below or


develop a topic on their own:

 Advise the Secretary-General of the United Nations on


how to deal with a contemporary international challenge.

 Compare and contrast regional integration in a regional


organization of your choice and in the European Union.
Explain the reasons for similarities and differences you
observe.
 Analyze the history of desirability of the United Nations
having its own military force to respond to crises around
the globe.

 How is an organization of your choice approaching


contemporary challenges like the end of the Cold War, the
rise of China, terrorism, and/or globalization?
(Remember, this question requires analysis and not just
description. So, try to figure out WHY the organization is
responding as it is.)
 How does the existence of the International Criminal
Court fit within the overall development of
international organizations? Comment on US' position
on the International Criminal Court evolved?

 Explore and analyze the international political impact


of an international non-governmental organization like
Amnesty International, International Rivers Network,
Human Rights Watch etc.
 Explore and analyze the success or failure of a
United Nations, NATO, European Union, or African
Union peacekeeping mission of your choice.

 Analyze how the World Trade Organization,


International Monetary Fund, and/or World Bank has
or has not changed operating procedures in response
to criticism or crises.
