Q6 Answer the following questions with reference to the following bio- geo-
chemical cycles
1) Carbon cycle
i) What is carbon cycle?
Ans The circulation and recycling of carbon from the atmosphere to living
organisms and after their death back to the atmosphere is called carbon
cycle.

ii) Name the two important processes of carbon cycle.

Ans Photosynthesis and respiration are the two important processes of
carbon cycle

iii) Write the balanced equation for photosynthesis and respiration

Ans 6CO2 + 12 H2O Sunlight C6H12O6 + 6H2O + 6CO2
Chlorophyll

C6H12O6 + 6O2 6CO2 +6H2O + energy

2) Oxygen cycle
i) What is the % of oxygen in the atmosphere?
Ans 21%

ii) What is oxygen cycle?

Ans Circulation and recycling of oxygen within the biosphere is called the
oxygen cycle.

iii) Name the processes during which oxygen is used up?

Ans Respiration, combustion, decomposition, corrosion, rusting etc.

iv) What are aerobes?

Ans Microbes which use oxygen for respiration are called aerobes.

3) Nitrogen cycle
i) What is the % of nitrogen in the atmosphere?
Ans 78%
ii) What is nitrogen cycle?
Ans The circulation and recycling of nitrogen gas into the form of
different compounds through various biotic and abiotic processes is
nature is called the nitrogen cycle.
iii) What is nitrogen fixation?
Ans Conversion of nitrogen into nitrates and nitrites through
atmospheric, industrial and biological processes is called nitrogen fixation.
iv) What is ammonification?
Ans Release of ammonia through decomposition of dead bodies and
excretory wastes of organisms is called ammonification.
v) What is nitrification?
Ans Conversion of ammonia into nitrites and then into nitrates is called
nitrification.
vi) What is denitrification?
Ans Conversion of nitrogenous compounds into gaseous nitrogen is called
denitrification.
