12 Methods of Bible Study

These are the 12 Bible study methods that will empower you to study the Bible
for yourself. They are presented in order of simplicity and use of the reference
works, starting with the easiest and continuing with the most difficult.

l. Devotional method . Select a short portion of your Bible and prayerfully

meditate on it until the Holy Spirit shows you how you can apply the truth He
showed you in your own life. Write a personal application.

2. Chapter summary method . Read a chapter of the Bible at least five times:
then write a summary of the central idea you found.

3. Character qualities method . Choose a character quality you would like to

acquire for your own life and study what the Bible says about it.

4. Thematic method. Choose a biblical theme. Then think of three or five

questions that you would like to have answers to. Next, study all the biblical
references to the topic that you can find and write down those that answer the
questions you had formulated.

5. Biographical method. Select a biblical character and research all the verses
that relate to that person in order to study their life and characteristics. Take note of
your attitudes, strengths and weaknesses. Then apply what you have learned in
your own life.
6. Topical method. Gather and compare all the verses you find on a particular
topic. Organize your findings into an outline that allows you to share the study with
others.

7. Word study method. Study important words in the Bible. Research how many
times a word is mentioned in Scripture and how it is used. Research the original
meaning of the word.

8. Book background method. Study history, geography, culture, science, and

political issues in biblical times. Use Bible reference books to increase your
understanding of the Word.

9. Book study method. Study an entire book of the Bible by reading it several
times until you get an overview of it. I studied the background of the book and took
notes of its contents.

10. Chapter analysis method. Master the content of the chapters of a Bible book
by taking an in-depth look at each of the chapter's verses. Break down each verse
word by word so you can see every detail.

11. Book synthesis method. Summarize the contents and main themes of a book
of the Bible after reading it several times. Make an outline of the book. This method
is put into practice after having carried out the book study method and the chapter
analysis method of each chapter of that book.
12. Verse-by-verse analysis method. This method selects a passage of Scripture
and examines it in great detail by asking questions, discovering cross-references,
and paraphrasing each verse. A possible application of each of the verses that
were studied is written.
