I. INTRODUCTION

One problem that can be identified from the topic is the financial burden that
college students studying at PUP (Polytechnic University of the Philippines) face when
living in condominium. The monthly expenses incurred by students for accommodation
in these settings can be significant and may strain their financial resources. This problem
highlights the challenge of affordability and the impact of high living costs on students'
overall financial well-being and academic performance. Students may struggle to meet
their basic needs, manage their expenses effectively, or experience financial stress due to
the high cost of living in condominiums while pursuing their education at PUP.
Addressing this financial burden is essential to ensure that students can focus on their
studies without the added pressure of excessive living expenses.

II. SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS

This survey focuses on identifying the monthly expenses of college students

studying at PUP Living Condominium and enabling them to develop efficient
management skills on handling money due to increasing expenditures. This study is only
limited to the 50 College students in PUP living in condominiums. It will not involve
anyone from different colleges or others not living in the condominium. The objectives
were limited to evaluating the monthly expenses of students studying in a university
living in a condominium and being able to give recommendations for them to make
efficient budgeting skills. The methodology used was through online survey forms like
Google Forms as a tool in gathering data and respondents were selected using non-
probability sampling techniques through purposive sampling method. The period of the
study was also limited to School Year, 2023-2024.

III. COLLECTION OF DATA

In collecting data for the study on the monthly expenses of students studying at PUP
living in condominiums, the methodology I used was through online survey forms like Google
Forms as a tool in gathering data and respondents are 50 college students from PUP and were
selected using non-probability sampling techniques through purposive sampling method. Online
survey forms have been beneficial in aiming to collect the target data among participants who are
not available at the exact time of data gathering. The survey conducted had 10 options, starting
from PHP 1,000 which is the lower amount of expenses and lasts with PHP 10,000 which is the
highest amount of monthly expense, to be chosen by the recipients in order to determine their
average monthly expenses as a student living in a condominium. The easy accessibility and
quick approach through the online survey form successfully provided convenience to the 50
target students studying at PUP.

IV. SUMMARIZATION AND TABULATION OF DATA

After conducting the survey regarding “The Monthly Expense of College Students
Studying at PUP Living in Condominium”, 50 students were chosen to be the respondents. The

2
following amounts were presented and they were tasked to select the appropriate amount of their
monthly expenses. Based on the gathered data, the students did not choose the amount of Php
1,000 which gives a 0%. There are two (2) students who answered Php 2,000 which gives a 4%.
For the Php 3,000, 8% of the students which is equivalent to 4 students choose this amount.
Moving forward, there are 24% of the students which is equivalent to 12 students who answered
that the total monthly expense is Php 5,000, this is the highest amount that most respondents
answer. There are 7 students which is equivalent to 14% who answered Php 6,000 for the total
monthly expense. For Php 7,000 and Php 8,000, they have the same ratings of 18% which is
equivalent to the total of 9 students answering each amount. There are two (2) students which is
4% of the total percentage answered Php 9,000 which is their total monthly expense. Lastly, only
one (1) student answered Php 10,000 as his/her total monthly expense for living in condominium
while studying at PUP.

V. MEASURES OF CENTRAL TENDENCY

A. MEAN

The amount of expenses the students of PUP living in condominium are the following:

10,000, 9,000, 9,000, 8,000, 8,000, 8,000, 8,000, 8,000, 8,000, 8,000, 8,000, 8,000, 7,000, 7,000,
7,000, 7,000, 7,000, 7,000, 7,000, 7,000, 7,000, 6,000, 6,000, 6,000, 6,000, 6,000, 6,000, 6,000,
5,000, 5,000, 5,000, 5,000, 5,000, 5,000, 5,000, 5,000, 5,000, 5,000, 5,000, 5,000, 4,000, 4,000,
4,000, 4,000, 3,000, 3,000, 3,000, 3,000, 2,000, 2,000

In determining the mean, let x denote the amount of expenses of a random college students from
the sample of 50 students studying in PUP and living in condominium. The sum of these
amounts is 297,000. Hence, the mean amount of expense of the 50 students is

= 297,000/50= 5940

B. MEDIAN

Given the amount of expenses of 50 students studying at PUP living in condominium consisting
of the following:

10,000, 9,000, 9,000, 8,000, 8,000, 8,000, 8,000, 8,000, 8,000, 8,000, 8,000, 8,000, 7,000, 7,000,
7,000, 7,000, 7,000, 7,000, 7,000, 7,000, 7,000, 6,000, 6,000, 6,000, 6,000, 6,000, 6,000, 6,000,
5,000, 5,000, 5,000, 5,000, 5,000, 5,000, 5,000, 5,000, 5,000, 5,000, 5,000, 5,000, 4,000, 4,000,
4,000, 4,000, 3,000, 3,000, 3,000, 3,000, 2,000, 2,000

Since the data is already arranged in descending order and there are 50 observations, hence, we
compute:

6,000/2 = 3,000
Median nth term = (total frequency + 1)/2
= 51/2
= 25.5

C. MODE

The most frequent amount is Php 5,000, a total of 12 students answered that amount as their
monthly expense. Therefore, the “average monthly expense” in our survey data must be Php
5,000.
Amount of Monthly Expense Frequency
Php 2,000 2
Php 3,000 4
Php 4,000 4
Php 5,000 12
Php 6,000 7
Php 7,000 9
Php 8,000 9
Php 9,000 2
Php 10,000 1

D. VARIANCE AND STANDARD DEVIATION

A. VARIANCE

B. STANDARD DEVIATION

5
 The variance is 3,567,755.1020 which shows the spread out of the number in the given
data set
 The standard deviation is 1,888.85 which shows the spread out of the values in the given
data set around the mean.

E. RANGE

The range is the difference between the largest and the smallest observations or items in a set of
data. Based on the gathered data, the highest monthly expense is Php 10,000 while the lowest
score is Php 1,000. Therefore

Range = 10,000 – 1,000 = 9,000

VI. CONCLUSION AND ANALYSIS OF DATA

After the data gathering from the 50 college students studying at PUP living in
condominium. Most of the students answered different amounts as their monthly overall
expense. The exact average calculated for the mean is P5940. On the other hand, P3,000 is the
middle value in the data between 25 th and 26th term wherein it is both P6,000 divided by 2.
Additionally, the amount with the most frequency, also called “mode,” is Php 5,000. The
variance is 3,567,755.1020 which shows the spread out of the number in the given data set and
the standard deviation is 1,888.85 which shows the values given data. Additionally, after
calculating the range, the result is 9,000. Generally, it is acknowledge that students living in
condominium is very high and sometimes it is difficult to budget allowances that may result in
shortage of expenses. Addressing the financial challenges faced by students at PUP living in
condominiums is crucial for enhancing their financial well-being and academic success.
