Concrete - A particle reinforced composite material

To cope up the tensile strength we reinforce the
concrete with steel or rebars (fiber reinforcement) to

Air-Entraining Admixtures – adds air content that
increases voids that lessen its strength. Used when
there’s snow that has freezing and thawing. (yeast in
breads is an air entraining admixture in bread)
Water expands as temperature decreases.
Accelerating Admixtures – accelerates the maximum
compressive strength (fc’), hardens after 28 days
(normal), due to time constraints we used this to fasten
the time usually 7 days.
Retarding Admixtures – slows it down. To have ample
time to pour the concrete in the area.
Batching plant – special facility design to manufacture
fresh concrete
Slump – measure of workability of concrete
Slump 6 – six hours
Superplasticizers – water reducers, allows low water
content. The lower the water the higher the
compressive strength. Low water, low slump which
means harder to pour its not workable.

• Uses a crane to lift a bucket filled with concrete to a
desired structure to be poured
• Used in structures with volume less than 10m3
• Usually used in columns and structural walls
3. Pumpcrete
• Short term for concrete pump
• Uses a pump and a robotic boom to pour large volume
of concrete to elevated or far areas
• Usually used in slabs and large footings
• High pouring rate
