Multiplication
We all know in Vedic Maths there are 2 methods for
multiplication.
1. Nikhilam Sutra
2. Urdava Sutra
In earlier steps we have learned Nikhilam Sutra. Now we
will study Urdava Sutra

Meaning – Criss Cross & Vertically

Mathematical Terms Meaning –

Step 1 – Vertical number calculation
Step 2 – Cross number calculation
Step 3 – Vertical & Cross calculation

Explanation – As of now we have learned many

methods to do multiplication. Now we will learn easiest
method for multiplication. As in this method we don’t
have to meet any particular criteria of base, sub base
etc. Any number multiplication with any number we can
do in Urdava Sutra & hence it is the easiest method to
do multiplications.

As explained we need to follow steps as shown in above

diagram. Step 1 is Vertical, Criss Cross & then Vertical.

Let understand, the example for the same.

Step 1 – 6 by 4 = 24

Step 2 – 6 by 5 & 4 by 2
30 + 8 = 38

Step 3 – 5 by 2 = 10

= 24 / 38 / 10 as we keep only single digit at one place.

= 2790 is the answer for 62 by 45

Example : 37 by 28

Step 1 – 3 by 2 = 6

Step 2 – 7 by 2 & 3 by 8
14 + 24 = 38

Step 3 – 7 by 8 = 56

= 6 / 38 / 56 = 1036

Answer 37 by 28 is 1036

Left to Right Multiplication

As you have seen & understood that we have done all

multiplication step 1 from left side numbers.
In Vedic Maths we are allowed to calculate from left to
Right which is more convenient to do as our brain is
mapped to do all things from Left to Right as we read,
write, see from left to right.

Example : 8 by 50

Step 1 – Add 0 to single Digit

= 08 by 50

Step 2 – 0 by 5 = 0
Step3 – 0 by 0 & 8 by 5 = 40
Step 4 – 8 by 0 = 0

Four Digit Multiplication

As we have learned in previous topics also, number of

digits are multiplied. Our Steps should be 1 less than
that. So now we are doing 4 by 4 digits means 8 digits
so steps needs to be followed are 7

Example : 1234 by 5678

Step 1 – 1 by 5 = 5
Step 2 – 1 by 6, 2 by 5 = 16
Step 3 – 1 by 7, 3 by 5 & 2 by 6 = 34
Step 4 – 1 by 8, 4 by 5, 2 by 7, 3 by 6 = 60
Step 5 – 2 by 8, 4 by 6, 3 by 7 = 61
Step 6 - 3 by 8, 4 by 7 = 52
Step 7 – 4 by 8 = 32

5 / 16 / 34 / 60 / 61 / 52 / 32 = 7006652 Answer

NOTE: If digit is missing then we can add 0 as learned

earlier.

Decimal Number Multiplication

Point to remember - Select the appropriate method

without observing decimal & do the calculation. Once
answer comes then put decimal before digits given in
question.

Example – 5.6 by 3.2

Here we will use method of 2 by 2 digits, steps needs to

be followed are 3

Step 1 – 5 by 3 = 15
Step 2 – 5 by 2, 6 by 3 = 28
Step 3 – 6 by 2 = 12

15 / 28 / 12 = 1792 Answer without decimal

Now observe the question, decimal is before 2 digits

(5.6 & 3.2) So we will put decimal before 2 digits in
answer

Answer 5.6 by 3.2 = 17.92

Multiplication of Special Cases

Sutra Used in methods:

➢ Antyayordashke : When sum of last digits is 10 or

its power
➢ Ekadhikena Purvena : By adding 1 to previous digit
➢ Urdava: Criss Cross Multiply

Example : 54 by 56

5 4 - Multiplicand
5 6 - Multiplier
Here you can see 2 conditions, 1. Ending digits of both
are adding to 10, 2. Starting digit is same – 5

We can apply Antyayprdashke sutra here.

Step 1 – 5 by 5 = 25
Step 2 – 5 by 6, 5 by 4 = 50
Step 3 – 4 by 6 = 24

P a g e 26 | 80

Step 3 Vedic Mathematics Inspiring Education Plus

INSPIRING EDUCATION PLUS
Here we applied Urdava sutra, Answer – 25 / 50 / 24

= 3024

Now, method 2 is quicker than the above. Where

we can apply Ekadhikena Purvena where you can
multiply previous number (T.P) by adding 1 to it.

Explanation – 54 by 56

Step 1 – 4 by 6 = 24
Step 2 – 5 by 5 +1 = 30

Answer 3024

NOTE : You can verify the answer & time

consumption for doing the calculation.

you observe 25, 75 its power of 100 and previous
number is same as 1

Step 1 – 25 by 75 = 1875
Step 2 – 1 by 1 +1 =2

When number of digits are more than the 9’s

Points to Remember:

1. Underline the number digits more than 9’s

2. Left side – Multiplicand – number of digits
underlined
3. Right side – Apply Nkhilam method
4. Right side will have digits as many 9’s are there.
Rest shift to left side.

Example: 36 by 9

Step 3 Vedic Mathematics Inspiring Education Plus

INSPIRING EDUCATION PLUS

Multiplication by multiples of 11 (22 / 33 / 55….)

POINT TO REMEMBER

We will break the multiplier to multiple of 11

Example:182 by 22

182 by 11 by 2 (we have break 22 = 11 by 2)

182 by 11 = 1/1+8/8+2/2 = 2002

= 2002 by 2 = 4004

So the answer for 182 by 22 = 4004

IMPORTANT – You need to observe the multiplier, if its

multiplier of 11 then multiply the digit by 11 & then with
the digit of the question

For Eg: if Digit by 33 = digit by 11 by 3

Here, we have break 33 to 11 by 3
