collapsed or cave-in. Shoring for excavations over 6 m deep shall
be designed by an approved Engineer and shoring installed shall
be approved and signed off by an approved Engineer.
 Competent & designated person shall be onsite at all times when
excavation activities are conducted. Inspections shall be done
every shift, be documented.
 Excavations shall be inspected by a Competent Person and the
results recorded:
o At the start of each shift
o After rain or high wind conditions
o After freezing and/or thawing temperatures occur
o After any condition that can change the integrity of the
soil
o Heavy duty activities that would change the
characteristics of the soil around the excavation

 Spoils must be placed a minimum of 2 meters from the edge of the
excavation. Loose soil or rocks shall be removed from the sides of
excavation.
 If hazardous or unknown materials are suspected /encountered,
the work shall be discontinued until a qualified individual (or group),
i.e., environmental compliance lead, can identify the suspect
material and ensure that it is safe to continue working. If it is
determined that the material is hazardous, then all applicable
jurisdictional codes and standards must be followed in order to
handle these materials each employee in an excavation shall be
protected from cave-ins.
 Employees will not be permitted to work under loads or near
digging equipment. Employees shall be required to stand away
from any vehicle being loaded or unloaded to avoid being struck by
any spillage or falling materials.
 Foot traffic and/or walking around or behind excavation equipment
shall be avoided and all ground personnel shall establish positive
eye contact with equipment operators before moving into the path
equipment’s.
 No loaded or heavy plant& equipment shall be parked near to the
excavation for prevention of collapse.
 Provide sufficient number to hazards light and signs for awareness
of employees.
 Temporary barrication shall be provided during the excavation with
provision of competent watchman to prevent the interfering
between man and equipment’s.
Note: Any excavation beside to live electrical cable; must ensure
additional system precaution (i.e. NOC/ permit, etc.) are adhered
as per ADDC/ approved third party.
