Activity Title: How the Computer Works

Learning Targets: a) Explain the information processing cycle
b) Convert simple words into binary codes
Reference/s: Esteban, Clifford P. The Amazing World of Computers 3. Quezon City: Phoenix

Data are raw facts about things, events, or activities that are
captured, recorded, and stored on the computer. They can be in the
form of words, numbers, or pictures.

Data become Information when they have been arranged or

organized to be of use and to have meaning to the user.

The steps which the data entered into the computer and undergo
several steps before they become meaningful and usable information
is called the Information Processing Cycle.

Binary Code
A bit or binary digit is the smallest unit of memory. A byte is a
group of 8 bits.
Each keyboard letter consists of eight binary digits. A four-letter
word is equal to thirty-two bits.

L = 8 bits
O = 8 bits
V = 8 bits
E = 8 bits
32 bits or 4 bytes

Activity:
Encircle T if the statement is true and F if it is false.
T F 1) A bit is the smallest unit of computer memory.
T F 2) Data can be in the forms of pictures and words.
T F 3) A byte is a group of eight bits.
T F 4) A three-letter word is equivalent to thirty-two bits.
T F 5) Data become information through the process of information
processing cycle.
