1902 – 1923 (Alfonso XIII - REGENERATIONISM)

1. Alfonso XIII becomes King at age 16


2. Spain had lost most of its colonies by 1898
3. Regenerationism: The government tried to modernize society and the economy. But
Regenerationism was not very effective because:
a. Citizens and politicians did not agree with the political system during the reign
of Alfonso XIII
b. The price of food had risen after World War II
c. Spain lost many troops sent to protect Morocco

1923 – 1930 (PRIMO DE RIVERA DICTATORSHIP)


1. Many people were unhappy with the government and the situation in Spain.
2. Primo de Rivera organized a coup and suspended the Constitution. He stablished a
dictatorship.
3. In the later year of the dictatorship, the public became more hostile towards it
because of Spain´s economic decline.
4. Alfonso XIII forced Primo de Rivera to resign in 1930.

1931 – 1936 (THE SECOND REPUBLIC)


1. In 1931, agreed to have municipal elections. the parties that favored a republic won.
2. The monarchy was abolished, and Alfonso XIII went into exile.
3. A new Constitution was approved in 1931.
a. Freedom of expression and religion
b. Women's right to vote
c. Equality among Spaniards
d. Limitation of the power of the Catholic religion
e. More regional autonomy

1936 – 1939 (COUP D´ETAT AND THE CIVIL WAR)


1. Spain was divided into two sides: the Republicans and the rebels, who were led by
General Franco.
2. The Civil War lasted three years.
3. The ward ended on 1939 with a rebel victory.
4. More than half a million people died during Civil War.
