Background: A student has recently moved

to a new location to pursue his

undergraduate studies. He is searching for an
apartment on rent. After examining several
apartments, he has found one that is very
near to his college and he also likes its
interior. Now, he needs to discuss the rent
with the landlord.
Dialogue:
Student (tenant) : I liked the interior of your
apartment and it is even very close to my
college. What is the rent?
Landlord : I am happy that you liked the
apartment. The rent of the apartment is
₹15,000 per month excluding electricity bill
and water supply bill.
Student (tenant): Is this price negotiable sir?
Landlord: How much can you pay me?
Student (tenant): I can pay you ₹12,000 per
month excluding electricity bill and water
supply bill.
Landlord: See, This is not the first time I am
offering my apartment for rent. Sorry , I
cannot go so down.
Student (tenant): Sir, I cannot pay you the
rent at your asking price, To what extent can
you reduce the rent?
Landlord : I can reduce the rent to ₹14,500
per month. You should accept it, it’s a very
generous offer.
Student (tenant) : Thank you sir for your offer.
But can you please reduce it to ₹14,000 per
month? You won’t regret having me as your
tenant.
Landlord : Ahh, Okay, but you should pay me
the rent on time. I want no unreasonable
delays.
Student (tenant) : Okay, Thank you so much
sir.

Conclusion: From the above conversation, it

is evident that both the landlord and the
tenant(student) were discussing their rent.
The proposed rent was ₹15,000 per month
excluding electricity bill and water supply bill,
however, the landlord was generous enough
to revise his offer to ₹14,500. And finally, the
deal was closed at ₹14,000 per month after
successive rounds of negotiations. The above
conversation is an example of Soft
Negotiation.
