SUMMARY OF THE FILM KINGS SPEECH

A short summary A Kings speech tells the story of the man who became King George VI, the father of Queen Elizabeth II. After his brother abdicates, George ('Bertie') reluctantly assumes the throne. Plagued by a dreaded stammer and considered unfit to be king, Bertie engages the help of an unorthodox speech therapist named Lionel Logue. Through a set of unexpected techniques, and as a result of an unlikely friendship, Bertie is able to find his voice and boldly lead the country through war.

High context vs. low context language in the film In the beginning of the film most of the scenes took place in a room where the Duke of York Bertie was being treated by the therapist Lionel. A lot of conversations between two of them were made. In the beginning the therapist tried to become closer with the Duke by calling themselves by names from childhood however he continued to address to the Duke in a very polite, linear and a professional way (as common in low context cultures language). The Duke Bertie had a high sensitivity personality/temperament as he was quick, impulsive and easily angered person and spoke in a very emotional way (appropriate mostly for people from high context cultures). During the film some scenes of Hitler giving a speach were shown. None of the clues were given to understand what fuhrer was saying. Hitler was shouting and waving, openly showing his emotion. It was clearly an opposite what the people were expecting as a speach from Britains King a short, strict, and calming speach in a clear, inspiring voice. At the ending scenes when Lionel gained Berties trust both Lionel and Bertie became close and the communication between them changed it became calm and more personal.

Haptic communication in the film In the times of pre world war II in Great Britain communicating by touch was not used between strangers as it has been considered presumptuous. The royal family members even while greeting didnt shake hands. For example the Duke Bertie only shook hands with some people that were his family trusted friends. In the beginning of the film minor and only necessary professional touches are observed between the therapist Lionel and his patient Bertie. At the ending when the new King of Britain Bertie grows his trust to Lionel, they not even shake hands but also he puts his arm on his shoulder as a sign of gratitude and the help he received.
