20-54-00-02 - Protection During Maintenance - Description and Operation (Airbus)
20-54-50-02 - Protection and Stowage for Electrical Items (EWIS) - Description (AIRB
US)
1. General
This chapter gives instructions for protection and stowage for electrical items installed on aircraft.
You must apply protection to components of EWIS (Electrical Wiring Interconnection System) during maintena
nce, repair or modifications. The wiring and its related components (protective covering, connectors, clamps,
conduits) frequently have the most sensitive part of an installation or a system.
You must be very careful during maintenance, repair or modification operations to keep the EWIS in the corre
ct condition.
In some cases, it is necessary to remove or move the wiring to give access to the work area during structural
repair or modification operations. This can cause damage to the wire insulation and arcing.
You must be very careful to prevent mechanical damage to the wiring when you use tools or other equipment
for structural repairs or modifications. Damage to wire installation can cause wire arcing, fire and smoke.
Debris such as drill shavings, loose fastener pieces, broken drill bits must not contaminate or go into the wirin
g or components. This can cause damages to the insulation and possible arcing.
You must be very careful when you apply cleaning agent as a spray at high pressure. If you apply high pressu
re directly into the wiring, it can cause contamination or degradation. You must install protection devices befo
re you apply the spray.
You must be very careful during servicing, repair or modification of waste systems, oil systems and hydraulic
systems to prevent contamination by fluids.
1. Overview
Protective caps (E0680) and plastic bags where possible, must be used to protect the non connected connecto
rs.
Protections must be removed just before connection.
Wired and unconnected end-fitting items must be temporarily protected and insulated until connection on the
aircraft.
End-fitting items must be stored on bundles and must not hanged on the last attachment point.
No temporary protection must be kept inside the aircraft.
When connectors are unused, they must be protected (for example, protective cap or stowage connector) in a
ccordance with definition dossier. For this, you must Ref. ESPM 20-33-30-02 for protection of connectors not u
sed.

NOTE: You must not tighten the cable ties too much to prevent damage to the electrical cables.
B. For coaxial connectors E0460, E0461 and E0462, you must use the heat-shrink conduit supplied with th
is type of connector or ABS0836 if not supplied. Put this conduit (with a length of 40 mm (1.57 in.) ma
ximum) on the rear part of the base. Shrink it and then pinch the rear of the connector with flat-nose p
liers after you remove the contact, the insulation, the sleeve, the plug, the ferrule and the plastic prote
ctive cap.
NOTE: You can use this procedure for all types of coaxial connectors.

1. Overview
You must use protective caps or plastic bags to give protection from moisture, dirt and mechanical damage w
hen connectors are not connected (during repair or maintenance or when the connector is installed as full pro
vision).
NOTE: When EN3545 type connectors are installed as full provision on VUs or in pressurized zones, you can
use the EN3545 connector as a protective cap.
When you use a protective cap with ARINC 600 connectors, you must attach the protective cap with lacing ta
pe NSA8420-7. With the lacing tape NSA8420-7, make a double capstan knot or an american knot.

n (AIRBUS)

1. Overview
It can be necessary, because of trouble-shooting or during the installation of a new system on the aircraft, to
disconnect one or more cables from a connector. These cables can stay in position on the aircraft because the
y will be used later in the conditions that follow:
- The stowage does not cause damage to other cables in the harness.
- You must identify the damage and remove all aggressive parts.
- The damage must not have an effect on the environment.
- You must install protection on the damage (Ref. ESPM 20-53-20-02).
- You must identify the old cables with "Do not use" at each end (Ref. ESPM 20-32-21-02).
- You must install end caps or sleeves at each end.
- You must not increase the harness diameter to more than the limit (distance to the environment, clamp
sizes) (Ref. ESPM 20-33-11-02).
NOTE: We recommend that you remove the initial cable that you do not used, if possible.
2. Procedure
- On both sides and if necessary, remove the cable ties or lacing tape to give correct access to the cable
ends,Ref. Fig. Protection and Stowage for Terminals and Contacts - Wire Stowage on Bundle
- You must disconnect the cable from the components it is connected to with the applicable extraction to
ol.
NOTE: If the cable to be stowed has a terminal lug, it is necessary to remove this end. To do this, cut the c
able at the back of the terminal-lug crimping area and then do the procedure that follows.
- The end of the cable must be insulated/protected from the rest of the installation. To do this, it is neces
sary:
- To select the end cap (Ref. ESPM 20-42-13-01) or
- To select the correct shrinkable sleeve depending on the cable and contact size and type. The corr
ect sleeve must:
- Be resistant to the temperature of the area where it will be installed,
- Have a sufficient internal diameter before shrinking so as to slide easily on the contact to be
insulated,
- Have an internal diameter after shrinking such as the sleeve perfectly fits the cable on whic
h it is installed.
- Immediately after shrinking and before the sleeve becomes too cool, the end of the sleeve will be pinch
ed using pliers so the sleeve is closed at its free end.
- The cable and the contact will then be stowed on the harness that they are part of as per the attached
appendix 1. The cable bending radius must stay above the minimum permitted bending radius which is
a minimum of six times the diameter of the cable to be stowed.
- The stowed cable must be attached on the harness (as per appendices 1 or 2) with cable ties or lacing t
ape in relation to the zone where it is installed.

A. With plastic bags
- For the description of plastic bags and related procedures, Ref. ESPM 20-54-51-02.
- On end fittings without special protection (for example splices, terminal lugs, etc.), make sure th
at a heat-shrinkable sleeve is installed to protect the connection.
- For items connected to equipment, terminal lugs and the contacts must be protected to each bef
ore delivery of the racks or harnesses by a sleeve (shrunk or not) to avoid short-circuit on aircraf
t start.
- Soldered connections must be protected with a heat-shrinkable sleeve. This sleeve must be adap
ted to the diameter of the connection and lightly force fitted. It must be possible to slide the slee
ve to do a check of the solder (not applicable to rotary type selectors).
- On harnesses where the diameter of the insulation is small or smaller than the cavities of the co
nnector, it is permitted to use a heat-shrinkable sleeve with a minimum length of 15 mm (0.59 i
n.) to agree with the diameter and make sure that the sealing is correct. This also prevents foldi
ng and gives better strength to the harness at the end and at tin soldering.
