Laboratory Activity 3 – Organism Affected by Environmental Changes

I. Introduction

Temperature

The last two billion years of the Earth’s temperature fluctuates. Temperatures
varied due to the greater amounts of gases in the atmosphere which affect climatic
changes to which the organisms can be able to adapt the drastic effect of temperature.
Temperature caused many species to go extinct.

Climate is one of the abiotic factors that affect the life of many living organisms
on earth. The rapid increase of temperature due to greenhouse gases can alter weather
conditions. Greenhouse gases such as carbon monoxide from the emission of
automobiles and sulfur oxides through coal burning contribute heat increase in the
atmosphere. Most species are not used to adapt abrupt changes of weather conditions.
Species that cannot adapt the changing climate on earth are difficult to find food for
survival which cause the species die and becomes extinct.

Glaciation

Temperature on Earth gets warmer and warmer which cause the glaciers in the
Arctic regions melts. Due to glaciation, rising of the sea level occurs which cause
catastrophic floods in different places. Many species drowned and died. The non-stop
increase of temperature can cause global warming. Glaciers in polar region begin to
melt which cause the rising sea levels. Water flows on land, which creates flood, making
it unsuitable for some species; and therefore, become extinct.

II. Procedure

1. Prepare different aquatic organisms such small fish, clams, shrimp or any
available aquatic organism.

2. Prepare 3 containers enough for the aquatic animals to swim. Each container will
have different temperature. (cold, warm, hot – should not exceed 85 °F).

3. Place the aquatic organism in a cold temperature first, after 10 minutes transfer
the aquatic organisms in a warm temperature then hot temperature. Observe the
condition of the aquatic living organisms.

4. Take a picture of your set up/experiment and attach in your write-up.

III. Questions

1. How do organisms respond to cold, warm and hot environments?

2. How do organisms change their environment?

3. Do the living organisms adapt immediately to the abrupt changing temperature?

How?
