REVIEW ON STRUCTURAL MECHANICS I:

STATE OF STRESSES DUE TO COMBINED LOADS

Objectives:
• To explain the procedure for establishing the
resultant normal and shear stress components at
a point in a member subjected to several different
types of loading simultaneously
PROCEDURE FOR ESTABLISHING THE STATE OF
STRESS AT A POINT IN A MEMBER SUBJECTED TO
SEVERAL DIFFERENT TYPES OF LOADINGS
PROBLEM # 1

The member shown above is subjected to the

horizontal load P = 400 N. Determine the state of
stress at points A and B.

Due to the P and MNA acting at centroid, the points A and B will be subjected
to the following state of stress:

The chimney as shown above is subjected to the

uniform wind loading of w = 150 lb/ft and has a
weight of 2200 lb/ft. If no tensile stress is allowed
to develop in the material, determine if the chimney
is safe . Take d = 6 ft and t = 1 ft.

It is clear that point A will be subjected to carry compressive stress. Let us see if the point B can
be subjected to tensile stress.
