TOPIC:
CONSERVATION LAWS
OBJECTIVES:
CONTENT:
SUB-TOPIC1: Definition of a collision
A collision can be defined as any event that involves two
or more bodies coming together resulting in a change in
momentum and energy.
SUB-TOPIC2 : Types of collision
There are two major types of collisions: elastic and inelastic
collisions.
1. Elastic collision
2. Inelastic collision
1. Elastic collision
In an elastic collision, both the total kinetic energy
and the total momentum of the colliding bodies are
conserved.
If the collision is perfectly elastic,we can write two
equations from the principle of conservation of
momentum and the principle of conservation of kinetic
energy as follows:
m1u1 + m2u2 =m1v1 + m2v2
1 2 1 2 1 1
2 m 1 u 1 + 2 m2u2 = 2 m1v12 + 2 m2v22
EVALUATION:
Give examples of elastic collision

ESSAY QUESTIONS:
A ball of mass 3kg and velocity 10m/s collides head-on with a
stationary ball of mass 7kg .The two masses coalesce and move off
together.
(a) Calculate their common velocity after the collision.
(b) Is the collision elastic or inelastic?
