WEEK SEVEN & EIGHT

TOPIC:

CONSERVATION LAWS
OBJECTIVES:

By the end of this lesson, learner(s) should be able to:

(i) Define and give examples of elastic collision
(ii) Define and give examples of inelastic collision

CONTENT:
SUB-TOPIC1: Definition of a collision
A collision can be defined as any event that involves two
or more bodies coming together resulting in a change in
momentum and energy.
SUB-TOPIC2 : Types of collision
There are two major types of collisions: elastic and inelastic
collisions.
1. Elastic collision
2. Inelastic collision
1. Elastic collision
In an elastic collision, both the total kinetic energy
and the total momentum of the colliding bodies are
conserved.
If the collision is perfectly elastic,we can write two
equations from the principle of conservation of
momentum and the principle of conservation of kinetic
energy as follows:
m1u1 + m2u2 =m1v1 + m2v2
1 2 1 2 1 1
2 m 1 u 1 + 2 m2u2 = 2 m1v12 + 2 m2v22

Examples of elastic collision are:

1.Bouncing of a ball when it hits the surface .
2.Collision between the atoms and
3.Collision between two billiard balls.
2. Inelastic collision
In an inelastic collision, only the total momentum of
the system is conserved. There is a loss in the total
kinetic energy of the system after the collision.
In perfectly inelastic collisions, the bodies stick and
move off together after the collision with the common
velocity(v) ,so that conservation of momentum equation
becomes
m1u1 + m2u2 =(m1+ m2)v
1 2 1 2 1
2 m1u1 + 2 m2u2 = 2 (m1 +m2) v2

Examples of inelastic collision are:

1.Car crash
2.The bullet hitting wood and
3.Seat belt tied to a person and the sudden application of
brakes.
CLASS ACTIVITIES:

Distinguish between perfectly elastic and perfectly inelastic collisions

EVALUATION:
Give examples of elastic collision

ESSAY QUESTIONS:
A ball of mass 3kg and velocity 10m/s collides head-on with a
stationary ball of mass 7kg .The two masses coalesce and move off
together.
