Practice Peer-graded Assignment:

Language is Cake
My name is Hoai. This is my first assignment of TESOL course, so it is a little bit
confused at first. However, thanks to the clear instruction in the course I could get
the point and feel free to complete this assignment: Language is Cake.

After watching the video from ASU, I was surprised about the metaphor
“Language is Cake” because I have never thought about that. But Language is
actually like a slice of cake with the following reasons. First, preparing ingredients
to make a cake is the same as teaching skills, background knowledge that teacher
needs to know to manage a class. Second, the taste of a cake not only depends on
people’s own taste but mostly also depends on their mood. They are willing to eat a
cake if the waiter serves gently and cleanly, thus the cake is also better than it is. It
compares to the way teacher communicates with students, students surely
understand the lesson if their instructor teach clearly and coherently. After all,
teaching language is also the same as making a cake and giving it to people, or,
language is like (a slice of) cake.

The metaphor in video has to do with teaching English. There are a lot of
similarities between the metaphor and teaching English. Teachers have to grasp the
basic principles in class before they start to teach the lessons. Teachers also learn to
know the ways to ignite students’ learning passion. That’s very important in
teaching that teachers need.

This course is very important to me to learn all the principles and learn to make
friends with my students and to complete my teaching skills. I always want to
inspire my love in learning English to my students.
