WEEK FOUR

TOPIC:
CONSERVATION LAWS
OBJECTIVES:

By the end of this lesson, learner(s) should be able to:

(i) Define Impulse

(ii) State the SI unit of an Impulse
(iii) Solve simple problems involving Impulse
CONTENT:
SUB-TOPIC1: definition of Impulse
Impulse is the product of the average force acting on the object and the time of action of
the force.
If a force (F) acts for a short time (t) ,the impulse (I) is given by : I = Fxt
Impulse is also the change in momentum of the object.
That is ,I =Ft =mv-mu
The SI unit of impulse is Newton second(Ns).or kilogram metre per second(kgm/s).Impulse is a vector quantity.
SUB-TOPIC 2 :Example 1
A stationary baseball is struck by a bat which exerts a force of 35N for 0.05s on it. Calculate the impulse given
to the ball.
Solution
Given:
Impulse(I) =?,time(t) =0.05s, Force(F) = 35N
I=Fxt
=35x0.05
=1.75Ns
SUB-TOPIC 3: Example 2
A force acting on a body causes a change in the momentum of the body from 12kgm/s to 16kgm/s in
2s.Calculate the magnitude of the impulse.
Solution
Given :
Initial momentum (mu) =12kgm/s, Final momentum(mv) =16kgm/s.
Impulse(I) =?
I=Ft =mv-mu =16-12 =4Ns or 4kgm/s.
EVALUATION:
A stationary ball is hit by an average force 50N for a time of 0.03s.what is the impulse experienced
by the body?
2. Define impulse
3. State the SI unit of an impulse
READING ASSIGNMENT:
