the DASH diet
The DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) diet
is considered an important advance in nutritional science.
It emphasizes foods rich in protein, fibre, potassium,
magnesium and calcium, such as fruits, vegetables, beans,
nuts, whole grains and low-fat dairy. It also limits foods
high in saturated fat and sugar.
The DASH diet is recommended by South African and
International Hypertension Guidelines as numerous
studies have consistently shown that it lowers blood
pressure across a diverse range of patients with
hypertension and pre-hypertension.
DASH is not a sodium-reduced diet, but its effect
is enhanced by reducing dietary sodium intake.
