Lesson 4. Mathematics as a Language

Highlights

A. Describe the rhetoric of the mathematical language.

 rhetoric is the study of how we make meaning in an effort to

communicate with others. Math becomes rhetorical when it affects an
audience. Mathematicians then become rhetors when they make choices
that will adjust the audience's response.

B. What are the characteristics of the mathematical language? Enumerate and

describe each.

 Comprehensive - has a set of vocabulary and parts of speech

 Concise - able to say things briefly
 Precise - able to make very fine distinctions
 Powerful - able to express complex thoughts with relative ease
 Non-Temporal - mathematical language has no tens of verb

C. What are the parts of speech of the mathematical language?

 Noun (numbers)- represented as quantities

 Pronoun (variables) - it represents numbers either letter/symbols
 Verbs (relation symbols) - comparison or relation
 Connectives (operation) - serve to link numbers and symbols
 Punctuation (grouping symbols) - gather and cluster group of numbers and
operations

D. Give three examples of each of the following: (i) mathematical expression, (ii)
mathematical sentence

Mathematical Expression Mathematical Sentence

n-1 50+20+80=150

x²-49xy+7y² The (√49) square root of 49 is 7

√350+2/x-1 7 is a prime number

Lesson 5. Sets, Relations and Functions

Highlights

A. What is a set?

 Collection of well defined objects, elements or numbers

 Can be presented in two methods
 Shown as a collection by using a pair of braces, “{}”.
Ex. 3∈S and 5∈ S
 Roster Method: listed down
Set builder Notation: common property of the elements

B. Let A and B be subsets of a universal set U. Give the theoretical definition of the
following:
1. Union of A and B - the set of elements which are in A, in B or Both A and B

2. Intersection of A and B - the set containing all elements of A that also belong
to B. (or equivalently, all elements of B that also belong to A)

3. Complement of A-denoted by A refers to elements not in A. absolute

complement of A is set of elements in U but not in A

4. A – B - it is a set of all elements of set A which are not there in set B.

[denoted by A∩B].

5. B – A - it is a set of all elements of set B, which are not there in set A.

[ denoted by by B∩ A].

6. A x B -
 set ordered pairs
 Cartesian product or product of non empty sets

C. What is a function?

 Rule that assigns elements of one set to another set

 Relation in which no two ordered pairs has the same elements
 Relation over two sets that associates every element of the first set.

D. What are the ways of writing a function?

 Set Notation - listing down the sets

Ex:

 Tabular Form - tabulating into table or graph

Ex:

 Mapping form - creating diagrams

Lesson 6. Binary Operations

Highlights

A. What is a binary operation?

 A mathematical operation, such as addition or multiplication performed on two

elements of a set to derive a third element. It elements from a set and gives a
unique result from the same set

B. What are the properties of a binary operation? Enumerate and explain each.

1. Closure property - the result should be in the specific set

2. Commutative property - the value of the binary operation is the same

3. Associative property - the value does not regardless of the groupings by

which the operation is performed

4. Identity element - there is an element is e ∈ S unique

5. Inverse element - for each a ∈ S we can find b ϵ S
