Airbus received a report on an in-service event on A319 aircraft about the loss of the right
hand windshield in flight, during the cruise phase).

There are 2 windshields on aircraft which are fail-safe designed (2 structural plies that can
each sustain pressurization loads and bird strike). They include de-icing function using heating
film near outer protective ply, electrically powered.

The investigation of the A319 event determined that both structural plies of the RH windshield
were damaged, due to a continuous arcing in the windshield heating system (at the level of the
power supply wires). Such electrical arcing requires a combination of at least the following
contributing factors: mechanical damage to the insulation sleeve of the power supply wires and
water ingress resulting in the wires corrosion. Several tens of seconds after the failure of the 2
structural plies, the last ply failed (outer ply, non-structural) and the windshield was ejected
due to the pressurisation loads.

As A300/A310/A330/A340 families windshields have a similar design to A320 family

windshields, it was decided to extend the inspection to A300/A310/A330/A340 families.

D. Description

This service bulletin provides instructions to inspect the windshield which could be potentially
affected by water ingress and corrosion inside the connector and within the heating system.

The inspection will consist of two main activities:

- A detailed visual inspection: delamination and inspection inside the terminal block.
- Electrical tests: Insulation & dielectric tests which will help to detect potential wiring
insulation damage and core degradation

The procedure of test and inspection, as well as the criteria and thresholds are defined in
Airbus Inspection Service Bulletin (ISB) A300-56-0014, A310-56-2008, A300-56-6007,
A300-56-9002, A330-56-3010, A340-56-4009, A340-56-5003.

E. Compliance

Recommended:
Service Bulletin recommended to be accomplished to prevent significant operational disruptions.
It is expected that an Airworthiness Directive (AD) published by the European Aviation Safety
Agency (EASA) will be issued to change this classification to Mandatory. Refer to Airbus
Inspection Service Bulletin A300-56-0014, A310-56-2008, A300-56-6007, A300-56-9002,
A330-56-3010, A340-56-4009, A340-56-5003 for the compliance time.

4.1.4.5 Rework after measurement.

Restore the part of the weather seal which have been removed, see the picture below.

Part of weather seal

to be restored

There are two different ways to rework the part of weather seal using either the polysulfide PR1784 or the
PR1425CF.

With the polysulfide PR1784:

Components required:
- Spatula
- Clean cloth
- PR 1784 sealant
- PR186 primer
- Isopropyl Alcohol

Repair procedure:

- Soak the clean cloth with isopropyl alcohol and clean the exposed metallic Z bar.

- Apply PR186 primer on weather seal and exposed metallic Z bar.

- Allow the PR186 to air dry a minimum of 30 minutes.

- Apply PR1784 sealant on the weather seal with a spatula to get the correct shape.

- Allow the sealant to cure a minimum of 6 hours.

- Remove the adhesive tape

- Clean the windshield with isopropyl alcohol.

With the polysulfide PR1425CF:

Components required:

Components required:
- Spatula
- Clean cloth
- PR1425CF sealant
- PR1861 primer
- Isopropyl Alcohol
- 220 grit or finer sand paper

Repair procedure:

- Along the area to be reworked, abrade the PR surface with 220 grit or finer sandpaper and remove
the residues.

- Soak the clean cloth with 50% isopropyl alcohol + 50% water solution and clean the exposed
metallic Z bar, the outer glass surface and the weather seal..

- Apply PR1861 primer on exposed metallic Z bar and on the glass. (No primer on the PR).

- Allow the PR1861 to air dry a minimum of 30 minutes.

- Apply PR1425CF sealant on the weather seal, the Z bar and the glass with a spatula to get the
correct shape.

- Allow the sealant to cure a minimum of 6 hours.

- Remove the adhesive tape

- Clean the windshield with isopropyl alcohol.

Note:
In case the interface medium (white strip) is partially visible along the Z bar, it will be repaired without
promoter. This part will be recovered by the added PR1784 or PR1425CF

For other alternatives, refer to the Airbus Inspection Service Bulletin A300-56-0014, A310-56-2008, A300-

Do a visual inspection of delamination/bubbles from outside the windshield from the daylight
opening (weather seal edge).

Criteria are:

A/ at AFT post, top AFT corner and lower AFT corner

As far as delamination/bubbles is visible at the AFT post, top AFT corner and lower AFT
corner, the windshield must be discarded and returned to SG Sully.

B/ at top, front and lower posts

If the delamination/bubbles is visible in a width of 20 mm from the daylight opening (weather

seal edge), it is recommended to reject the windshield.

If the delamination/bubbles exceeds a width of 20 mm from the daylight opening (weather seal
edge), the windshield must be discarded. The criteria of delamination/bubbles is indicated in
the drawing and cross section below.

4.2.4.5 Rework after measurement.

Components required:

Components required:
- Spatula
- Clean cloth
- PR1425CF sealant
- PR1861 primer
- Isopropyl Alcohol
- 220 grit or finer sand paper

Repair procedure:

- Along the area to be reworked, abrade the PR surface with 220 grit or finer sandpaper and remove
the residues.

- Soak the clean cloth with 50% isopropyl alcohol + 50% water solution and clean the exposed
metallic Z bar, the outer glass surface and the weather seal.
