and answer all parts of the following questions.

C1. A 0.800 kg point mass is vertically suspended on an ideal spring with spring constant
of 20.0 N m−1 . The mass undergoes a simple harmonic motion with an amplitude
of 4.00 cm along the y axis around the equilibrium position at y = 0.00 m.

(a) Find the period and the angular frequency of the oscillation.
(b) At time t0 = 0.00 s the mass is at y = 1.00 cm and is moving in the direction of
negative y. Calculate the necessary parameters and write down the equation
for harmonic motion of the mass as a function of time.
(c) Find the velocity of the mass at the moment t =1.20 s.
(d) When the mass had zero velocity, the experimenter kicked the mass along the
y direction imparting a speed of 5.00 cm s−1 immediately after the impact.
Find the maximum deflection of the mass from the equilibrium position during
oscillations after the event. [12]

C2. A transverse wave with displacement along the y axis of amplitude A = 2.00 cm and
a cyclic frequency of f = 80.0 Hz, is travelling along the string in the direction of
negative x axis with the velocity v =10.0 m s−1 .

(a) Write down the equation in symbolic variables that determines the displace-
ment, y, of a string as a function of time, t, along the x axis as a function of
f, A, v, x, t and a phase φ.
(b) A point on the string at x = 0.000 cm at the moment t = 4.00 × 10−3 s has the
coordinate y = 0.500 cm and moves in the direction of negative y. Calculate
the necessary parameters and write down the equation for the displacement of
a string as a function of time and position along the x axis.
(c) The wave described in (b) now encounters a fixed wall at the coordinate x =
0.00 m. Write down the equation for the resulting standing wave and the
position of the antinode closest to x =0.00 m.

C3. A pipe organ can be represented as a series of tubes that are closed at one end and
open at the other. You may assume the speed of sound in air is 344.0 m s−1 .

(a) Calculate the length of the certain tube of the pipe organ if that tube funda-
mental frequency is f0 = 440.0 Hz.
(b) The listener runs towards the pipe organ at a speed of 5.000 m s−1 . Find out
the frequency a listener will hear.
(c) Draw a diagram showing the displacement and the pressure of the first overtone
of the tube in part 3(a). Specify the frequency of the overtone.

4
(d) The organist pressed two different notes that produces sound from two tubes
simultaneously. The frequency of one tube is f0 = 440.0 Hz and the frequency
of the other tube is f1 = 466.2 Hz.
Write down the symbolic equation of the air displacement as a function of time.
Draw a corresponding sketch and specify the value of the beat frequency.
