Under the supervision of the Program Director – Chief of Rehabilitation Services, the Rehab Therapist (Music)
shall provide diagnostic, rehabilitative, and treatment services to the patients of the Salinas Valley – Psychiatric
Inpatient Program. The Rehab Therapist (Music) provides services through appropriate forensic inmate
assessment, treatment, service planning, therapeutic activities, discharge planning, and community reintegration
by using the principles and practices of these disciples to develop, maintain, or restore physical, emotional, and
social competencies.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

30% Assesses, plans, schedules, implements, conducts individual and group therapy sessions and
rehabilitative activities/services based on patients’ emotional, cognitive, physical and social level of
functioning. Provides rehabilitative services utilizing music media and activities to provide a non-
threatening self-motivating experience to assist an individual relating to the immediate environment,
the self, and the community; provides an atmosphere compatible to behavioral change, self-
expression, and nonverbal and verbal communications.

30% Provides initial and periodic rehabilitation therapy assessments and formulates rehabilitation
treatment objectives and plans. Evaluates and documents forensic client/patient/inmate response
and progress. Writes progress notes in accordance with licensing and Clinical Record Documentation
System requirements. Notes should be reflective of attendance, behavior and progress in meeting
established therapeutic objectives and goals. Prepare team conference reports and other documents
as required. Gather patient assessment information through shift changes, morning meetings,
interdisciplinary teams, group observation, patient interview, and chart review. Completes peer audits
as assigned. Attends and participates in program and service meetings, conferences and committees
to reinforce other treatment modalities. Participates in professional development programs and keeps
current on trends and developments in related fields.

20% Assists staff in the counting, distribution, and accounting for all items to prevent their use as weapons;
observes and to ensure accurate inventory for all equipment and supplies used by patients in
rehabilitative therapy sessions and/or through the program checkout system. Observes and
intervenes in instances of disruptive or assaultive behavior. Inspects facility to identify security
breaches that could lead to forensic patient, or inmate escape; and observes and intervenes in patient
behavior that may signal an impending escape attempt.

15% Acts as the unit Activity Coordinator in planning, organizing, and assisting other unit staff in carrying
out the overall activity program. Seeks patient input and involves patients in planning and carrying out
the activity program. Procures therapy/activity program supplies and equipment. Maintains equipment
and supplies and schedules repairs as needed.
5% Other duties as assigned.

The Rehabilitation Therapist - Music is under the direct supervision of the Program Director – Chief of
Rehabilitation Therapy Services.

KNOWLEDGE OF:
Rehabilitation Therapist (Music) should have knowledge of the principles, procedures, techniques,
trends, and literature of rehabilitative services, especially those relating to, developmental, mental, or
physical disordered offenders; the process of restoration, maintenance, and development of
capabilities; principles of mental health education; scope and activities of private and public health
and welfare agencies; characteristics of
mental, emotional, physical, and developmental disorders; current trends in mental health, public
health, and public welfare; Federal and State programs in these fields.
ABILITY TO:
Utilize and effectively apply required technical knowledge; establish and maintain the confidence and
cooperation of persons contacted in the work; secure accurate clinical data and record such data
systematically; compose clear, accurate, and concise reports; interpret statistical data; analyze
situations accurately and take effective action; communicate effectively.
LICENSE OR CERTIFICATION
It is the employee’s responsibility to maintain a license, credential, or required registration pertinent to
their classification on a current basis. Any failure to do so may result in termination from Civil Service.
Employees in this classification must have:
 Equivalent to graduation from a recognized college with major work in music therapy,
or registration with the American Music Therapy Association, or eligibility for such
registration.
 Completion of an approved clinical internship in the appropriate rehabilitation
specialty.
