Different Media of Sculptures
Terra cotta (cooked earth)
- A baked clay or clay fired in a kiln at a relatively high temperature.
- Firing the clay causes the moisture to evaporate and hardening the clay.
- Clay can be molded into any form before it is molded.
- It is fragile; it breaks easily.
The Chinese Tera cotta Army
One of the greatest works in the history of sculpture, the set of fired clay figures known as
the Chinese Terracotta Army - made during the short period of Qin Dynasty art (221-206 BCE) -
consists of 8,000 clay warriors and horses which were unearthed in 1974 adjacent to the tomb

Glass
- Made by heating and cooling a combination of sand and soda lime.
- The glass may be transparent, translucent, or opaque.
- It also can be molded into various shapes and colors.
Sculpting of glass can be made using the following techniques:
1. Hot sculpting is using a metal rod to gather the molten glass from the furnace and
shapes it using another tool.
2. Cold working is using cold hardened glass. This involves sandblasting, engraving,
polishing, and grinding to create the sculpture of glass.
3. Glass blowing is gathering the molten glass from the furnace using a blowpipe. Air is
blown into the pipe and shapes the glass before it cools down.

- While plastic is soft, it can be molded into a form.
- Sculptures using plastic are usually reproductions of the original work.
The term "plastic art" - derived from the word "plasticize", meaning "to mould" - describes any
art form which involves modelling or moulding in three dimensions.
