Three useful writing tips

1: Storytelling
Wh t you include in your thesis should tell story

• Keep the reader in mind: Motivate and guide them through the text.
• Close the story arc: Answer the expectations you set up in the Introduction.
• You probably have several story arcs:
a
2: Read through your own text
C refully!

• Have you actually written what you think you have?

This thesis is about gravitational lensing. This is a technique that is o en used to study dark matter.

• Do you really mean the words you have written?

(Remember: other people are not in your head!)

• Read each other’s texts.

• Read your text aloud to yourself.

a
3. Precision

• Academic writing: High level of precision.

• BUT don’t use sesquipedalian words just for the sake of it!
long
• Hiding?
• You don’t need to write long, convoluted sentences.
• An active voice will often shorten your sentences.
• The most important part of the sentence rst!

fi
Writing is hard.
Even for the best.

First dra s should usually be horrible.

ILLUSTRATION IMAGES
In a sense, decoration.
CHECK the license!
If the license gives you permission to use the image, go ahead but: Cite the source!
(The license should also be included when you cite)

No info about the license? Find something else…

or ask permission.
A license you don’t understand? Ask permission!
(Look for contact details, a web editor of the page etc.)
CAN YOU MAKE IT YOURSELF?
(But don’t use photos of recognisable people…)

NB: Licenses for EDITING an image usually

requires a more open licence than for just re-use.

SOME COMPRESSED ADVICE
WHEN GIVING PRESENTATIONS
IF YOU KNOW YOU
SPEAK (TOO) FAST:
REMEMBER TO TAKE MICRO-BREAKS
DON’T FEEL EMBARRASSED
ABOUT EXPLAINING STUFF!
CLEAN UP CLUTTER
(Don’t over ll your slides with plots, gures, pictures AND text…!)

AN AWFUL SLIDE CAN ALSO LOOK LIKE THIS
• This is a very important point that we know is important because it comes rst in this list of important stuff.

• Followed by an example in an under-category of the bullet point.

• And then we can put under-under-categories.

• Keynote offers an in nite number of bullet points that can be added to each slide.

• With under-bullet points that explains this point even better.

• And we can go on and on inde nitely… because Powerpoint or Keynote or whatever program it is that we are using to make this presentation
adjusts itself along the way.

• Because the program just makes the font size smaller as we write in more things.

• And there are ALWAYS more things to write about…

• and more details that can be included adin tum…

PRACTICE
Bird’s eye view. Take a step back.
PRACTICE YOUR ELEVATOR PITCH
THE ELEVATOR PITCH

• Forces you to leave out details (you can come back to these later).

• Where in the overall picture does you project t in?

• Practical use in society? Tell us!

• Improving theory? Tell us which theories and where your work ts

in!
PRACTICE YOUR ELEVATOR PITCH

• Think individually (5 minutes)

• Partner with the closest person.

• Tell the other person your elevator pitch - 3 minutes each!

• Volunteer for giving you pitch in plenum afterwards? (PRIZE!)
