PRINCIPLES OF WORK AND ENERGY
The principle of work and energy is used to solve kinetic problems that
involve velocity, force and displacement.

𝑇1 + ෍ 𝑈1−2 = 𝑇2
WORK DONE BY SLIDING
WORK DONE BY SPRING
WORK DONE BY GRAVITY
WORK DONE BY VARIABLE FORCE
EXAMPLE #1
The 10-kg block shown in the figure rests on the smooth incline. If the spring is
originally stretched 0.5 m, determine the total work done by all the forces acting on the
block when a horizontal force P = 400 N pushes the block up the plane s = 2 m.

EXAMPLE #2
The 200N block reaches a velocity of 12m/s in 40m starting from rest due to a 100N
force. Compute the coefficient of friction between the block and the floor.
EXAMPLE #3
For a short time, the crane in the figure lifts the 2.50-Mg beam with a force of F = (28 +
3s2) kN. Determine the speed of the beam when it has risen s = 3 m. Also, how much
time does it take to attain this height starting from rest?

EXAMPLE #4
The platform P, shown in the figure below (a), has negligible mass and is tied down so
that the 0.4-m-long cords keep a 1-m-long spring compressed 0.6 m when nothing is on
the platform. If a 2-kg block is placed on the platform and released from rest after the
platform is pushed down 0.1 m, figure (b), determine the maximum height h the block
rises in the air, measured from the ground

EXAMPLE #5
A body weighing 2,225N is being dragged along a rough horizontal plane by a force P =
445N. If the coefficient of friction is 1/12 and the line pull is inclined 18° with the
horizontal, what is the velocity when the body moves 3.65m from rest.

EXAMPLE #6
The block shown has a velocity V1 = 25m/s at A and a velocity V2 = 15m/s as it passed B
down on the incline. Calculate the coefficient of friction between the block and the
plane if s = 100m and theta = 25degrees.

KEY TAKEAWAYS
oThe work-energy principle can be represented by the integral of the force
with respect to the displacement of the particle
oThe resulting equation can be expressed as the work done being equal to
the change in kinetic energy from the initial to the final point
oWork done is positive if the force and displacement are in the same
direction and negative if they are in the opposite direction.
