SOIL INVESTIGATION

SUBMITTED BY:22-CE-189(FARAH)
SUBMITTED TO:Dr.MUHAMMAD USMAN ARSHID
SECTION: A
UNIVERSITY OF ENGINEERING AND
TECHNOLOGY,TAXILA
Site Plan
Collect disturbed sample
from the site
Preserve and transport soil
sample to lab according to
ASTM D4220
Location of the site : Taxila
Coordinates of the location:
33.74N 72.83E
Method of taking soil
sample: using hand auger
Tests/Experiments
Following tests have been planned to perform on
the given soil sample.
➢ Standard Test Methods for Laboratory Determination of Water
(Moisture) Content of Soil and Rock by Mass (ASTM D2216 -19)

➢ Standard Test Methods for Particle-Size Distribution (Gradation)

of Soils Using Sieve Analysis (ASTM D6913/D6913M-17)

➢ Determination of specific gravity of soil sample using Flask

(ASTM D854-14)
Tests/Experiments
➢ Standard Test Method for Particle-Size Distribution (Gradation)
of Fine-Grained Soils Using the Sedimentation (Hydrometer)
Analysis (ASTM D7928 -17)

➢ Standard Test Methods for Liquid Limit, Plastic Limit, and

Plasticity Index of Soils (ASTM D4318)
Tests/Experiments
➢ Standard Test Methods for Laboratory Compaction
Characteristics of Soil Using Standard Effort (12 400 ft-lb/ft3)

(ASTM D698 -07)

➢ Determination of coefficient of permeability of fine grained soil
(Variable head method) (ASTM D5084 -10)
Standard Test Methods for
Laboratory Determination of Water
(Moisture) Content of Soil and Rock
by Mass
Designation:
ASTM D2216 -19

Results:
M.C = 14.1 %
M.C of Soil is 14.1% which reduces the cohesion in soil.
Standard Test Methods for Specific
Gravity of Soil Solids by Water Flask
Designation:

ASTM D854-14

Results:

Specific gravity of soil = 2.61

It is used to calculate soil density, void ratio, degree of

saturation and other properties of soil.
Standard Test Methods for Particle-
Size Distribution (Gradation) of Soils
UsingSieve Analysis
Designation:

ASTM D6913/D6913M-17

Results:

Soil passing from sieve#200 = 5.08

Soil passing from sieve#4 = 31.60

Soil passing from sieve#10 = 87.60

These results help us to classify the soil.
Standard Test Method for Particle-Size
Distribution (Gradation) of Fine-Grained
Soils Using the Sedimentation
(Hydrometer) Analysis
Designation:

ASTM D7928 -17

Results:

Minimum Particle Size = 0.010 mm

Standard Test Methods for Liquid
Limit, Plastic Limit, and Plasticity
Index of Soils
Designation:
ASTM D4318-00
Results:
L.L = 31.3 %
P.L = 17.74%
P.I = L.L-P.L = 31.3%-17.74% = 13.36
Standard Test Methods for
Laboratory Compaction
Characteristics of Soil Using
Standard Effort (12 400 ft-lb/ft3)
Designation:
ASTM D698 -07
Results:
Maximum Dry Density:122.12 lb/ft³

Optimum Moisture Content = OMC = 12.27%

Determination of coefficient of
permeability of fine grained soil
(Variable head method)
Designation:
ASTM D5084 -10
Results:
K=0.02453cm/s
