Performance-Based Task

in
Basic Calculus Grade 11

I. Performance Standard
The learners investigate, analyze, and solve optimization problems, related rates problems, and
tangent and normal line at a given point on a curve.

II. Objectives
The learners will be able to …
1. accurately illustrate optimization problems, related rates problems, and tangent and normal line;
2. derive equations from optimization problems, related rates problems, and tangent and normal line;
2. solve accurately real-world problems involving derivative of a function;
3. create an output that shows both neatness and accuracy; and
4. work collaboratively within a group.

III. Performance Task

A. Solve following problems. Provide a complete procedure on how you achieve your solution.
A. OPTIMIZATION PROBLEMS
1. A piece of wire length 50 cm is cut into two sections. One section is used to construct a
rectangle whose dimensions are in the ratio 3:1; the other section is used to construct a square.
Find the dimensions of the rectangle and the square so that the total enclosed area is a minimum.
B. RELATED RATES PROBLEMS
2. A rectangular field is formed using a building as 1 side. The other 3 sides are to be fence with
fencing wire. Given that there is 85 m of fencing wire, find the maximum possible area of the field.
1. Two straight roads meet an angle of 60 o. A starts from this intersection and travels along one
road at 40 km/h. One hour later, B starts from the intersection and travels along the other road at
50 km/h. Three hours after A starts, at what rate is the distance between A and B changing?
2. A conical tank with a vertical axis has a semi-vertical angle of 45 o. Water, initially at a depth of 5
meters, leaks out through a hole at the bottom of the tank at a rate of 0.2 √ h m3/min when the
depth is h meters. Find the rate at which the depth is decreasing when the depth is 4 meters.
C. TANGENT LINE AND NORMAL LINE
1. Find the equation of the tangent and normal line to the curve y 2−3 xy +2 x 2=4 at (3, 2).
