Performance-Based Task

in
Basic Calculus Grade 11

I. Performance Standard
The learners investigate, analyze, and solve optimization problems, related rates problems, and
tangent and normal line at a given point on a curve.

II. Objectives
The learners will be able to …
1. accurately illustrate optimization problems, related rates problems, and tangent and normal line;
2. derive equations from optimization problems, related rates problems, and tangent and normal line;
2. solve accurately real-world problems involving derivative of a function;
3. create an output that shows both neatness and accuracy; and
4. work collaboratively within a group.

III. Performance Task

A. Solve following problems. Provide a complete procedure on how you achieve your solution.
A. OPTIMIZATION PROBLEMS
1. A rectangular paddock is to be fenced and also divided into six smaller rectangular paddocks,
with one dividing fence parallel to the length and two dividing fences parallel to the width. The total
length of the fencing to be used is 120 meters. If the width of the paddock is x meters and the
length is y meters, find the maximum area of the paddock.
2. Find the dimensions of a rectangle whose area is 1000 ft 2 if the perimeter will be as small as
possible.
B. RELATED RATES PROBLEMS
1. A lamp is 6 m directly above a straight footpath. A person 2 m tall walks along the footpath
away from the light at a constant speed of 1 m/s. At what speed is the end of the person’s shadow
moving along the path?

2. The mass of a raindrop M = p π r where p is the density of water 1 g/cm 3, and r the radius of
4
the drop. At what rate is the radius of a raindrop changing when it has a radius of 5 mm and is
gaining water at rate of 0.02 g/mm?
C. TANGENT LINE AND NORMAL LINE
1. Find the equation of the tangent and normal line to the curve y 2 +3 xy=4 at (1, -4).

B. Content
1. Cover Page: (See Sample)
a. Title of the output: Optimization Problems, Related Rates Problems, and Tangent and Normal Line
b. Names: e.g., Juan M. Dela Cruz
c. The Institutional Affiliation: Senior High School Department, King’s College of the Philippines
