Social Media Obsession: Self Control

Technology has been evolving for almost a decade. These days, young people are used
to those technology. However, it seems like they have become addicted. It's as if
they can't live without their phones or technology.

While browsers such as Google or Firefox are educational and useful to people of
different ages, social media is different. Young people's eyes are glued to their
phones, scrolling through social media everyday.

This has caused a huge impact on their lives. Studies show that social media is
damaging the mental health of teenagers. They often get no sleep, distracted by
both schoolwork and scrolling through countless pictures of either their
celebrities' or their crush's. Moreover, cyberbullying exists. Cyberbullying is
often encountered on the internet, whether it be for a stupid reason or for no
reason at all. Negative emotions wash over the victim, either resulting in taking
their own life, or becoming depressed.

Of course, they get bullied at school for getting depressed too. Social media
affects the personalities of young people, making them ruder, thinking it makes
them 'cooler', while they're really just making another person miserable.

However, who is to blame for all of this? You can read the news just by a few
clicks. You can have entertainment. You can get help for cooking or baking. You can
share your experience with others. The internet is made to be efficient and helpful
to humans and it's doing its job quite well. Young people are not to blame, nor the
internet. Why wouldn't they get addicted to something so wonderful?

No, it's their self-control. Using social media is fine. Just not using it every
minute of the day. They need to be able to control themselves. Make promises to
themselves, on how many hours they want to stay on the media before closing and
going out to do other things. Expanding their social circles, exploring new
hobbies, spending time with their family - there's many things to do rather than
being holed up in their room for the entire day. They fail to see there's more to
life than watching cats dance on YouTube.
