CONTEMPORARY PHILIPPINE ARTS FROM THE REGIONS

Name: ____________________________ Grade Level: 11/12

Date/Week/_________________________

I.
Describes various contemporary art forms and their practices in the regions.
CAR11/12IAC-0a-1

II.

Since the dawn of man, arts have been one of the means for them to
share their stories, life, and culture. Because of art, people at the present had an
inkling that the earliest humans on Earth are already capable of expression,
imagination, and creativity. Art started in a cave a long time ago and evolve from
then on to what it is now today.

Art evolved throughout the years and underwent various transformations

through its movements and styles from the different eras. Today art is generally and
collectively in the Contemporary Art Movement. Despite its lengthy and historical
journey, people’s understanding of art is still diverse and vague.

As a Senior High School student, it is part of your responsibilities to increase

and deepen your understanding of contemporary art, especially in the Philippines.

In this module you will learn about:

1. Contemporary arts and its various forms and practices from the various
regions.
2. How to appreciate the significance of contemporary arts to our life

Contemporary Art Forms in the Regions

Art has been around since time immemorial. It has evolved through the art
movements of the various era where artists began challenging how people
understood and view art. From the primitive art of the stone age to the art of early
civilizations, from the Renaissance Art to the Modern Art and to the Contemporary
Art. The innovative, novel, bizarre, surreal and sometime controversial works of
artists have shaped the transformation of art throughout time to what we have today
at the present, the Contemporary Arts.

What is Contemporary Art?

Defining and understanding Contemporary Arts seems easy, but a period-

based classification of defining art posed difficulty and problems, just as the case of
modern and post-modern art. Contemporary art is defined as any art made today in
the modern times, or those artworks done in the 1960s up to the present. However,
this definition seems to be very inclusive as it assumes that all arts done within the
specified time is contemporary art, but that is not the case for all artworks done in the
present.

There are works today that is still done purely in the traditional way or does
not follow the philosophy of contemporary arts or does not characterize it. How does
‘Art’ differ with Contemporary Art? If one can ask what Contemporary Art is,
therefore, it is valid to also ask what Contemporary Art is not. To fully understand
this, one needs to be familiar with the history of art.

Appropriation refers to the utilization of

old or previous existing works, objects
or images to create a new artwork. It
involves using pop images or famous
icons to criticize or create satiric work or
to challenge the view and perspective of
the spectator. An example of this is an
image below where Andy Warhol
recreated and of Venus.

Hybridity is the usage of non-
conventional materials or mixing unlikely
materials and putting them together as
part of one’s work. This material is often
referred to as found objects. The
image below shows an installation art by
Alfredo and Isabel Aquilizan, it is an
example of hybridity since it uses found

objects; balikbayan boxes, and an old

Space characterizes contemporary art

in a way that some of them are site-
specific, meaning the location or the
space where the work is erected or
established helps by becoming part of
the immersive and spatial experience of
a specific artwork. The image at the left
is a sample of how space becomes an
essential element of contemporary art.

Technology is another
component of most contemporary art
since many of them function with the aid
of technology or machineries such as

Their origins can be traced to their
native region. Traditionally, the use of
said crafts and items are primarily for
functional purposes or utility and
sometimes for religious or ritual
purposes, such as the Vacul of the
Ivatans, Tinalak of the T’bolis, Vinta or
Bukay of the Zamboangeños, and
Bulul Figures of Ifugao. These crafts
are region-specific and has become part
of their culture and identity. Today as
part of the effort to preserve this identity,
they established festivals to celebrate of

Contemporary Arts are arts made today specifically from around the 1960s
to the present. However, not all arts made today are contemporary art, it has to
characterize avant-garde qualities, show experimental quality, and exude themes
that challenge universal world issues and our view about art itself, and it has to
utilize unconventional techniques and materials. It also must manifest the different
elements such as appropriation, hybridity, performance, space, and technology.
