TERRARIUM

Name :- Sunny Kumar Sahni

Class & Section :- Xth-A

WHAT IS TERRARIUM?

● terrarium, also called glass garden, wardian

case, or vivarium, enclosure with glass sides,
and sometimes a glass top, arranged for
keeping plants or terrestrial or semi-terrestrial
animals indoors.
● The purpose may be decoration, scientific
observation, or plant or animal propagation.
TYPES OF TERRARIUM
● There are two main types of terrarium: open and closed.
Both are made from a selection of compatible plants
(plants that need the same growing conditions), and
they live in an enclosed, or partially enclosed, clear
container (which can be plastic, but is usually glass).
● The closed terrarium is the more classic type, designed
for housing humidity-loving tropical plants. Whereas the
open terrarium is designed for arid plants like cacti and
succulents.
WHAT WE'LL NEED TO BUILD A
CLOSED TERRARIUM
EQUIPMENTS / TOOLS
•LARGE SPOON OR GARDEN TROWEL
•SMALL GARDEN SNIPS OR SCISSORS FOR
TRIMMING PLANT ROOTS
•SPRAY BOTTLE
MATERIAL
● A closed terrarium is a self-sustainable ecosystem
inside a glass vessel.
● Vessel can be anything as long as it’s transparent.
For example :- Glass containers with no drainage
hole, with or without a top, fishbowls, spice jars.
● Pebbles.
● Activated Charcoal.(Found at a Nursery or Pet
Supply Store)
● Potting Soil.
● Slow-growing Small Terrarium Plants.
● Decorative Things.(Optional)
❏ In this terrarium only lifeforms will be plants as
more lifeforms such as insects make things a
whole lot more difficult.
FEW EXAMPLES OF PLANTS THAT DO
WELL IN A CLOSED TERRARIUM
● Nephrolepis cordfolia “Duffii” (Lemon Button Fern).
● Pellaea rotundifolia (Button Fern).
● Nephrolepis exaltata (Fluffy Ruffles Fern).
● Pteris cretica ‘Albolineata’ (Silver Ribbon Fern).
● Selaginella uncinata (Peacock Fern).
● Ficus pumila (Creeping Fig).
● Peperomia prostrata (String of Turtles).
STEPS TO BUILD A TERRARIUM
● Step 1 :- Spread half to 1-inch layer of pebbles
inside the base of the box for drainage.

● Step 2 :- Add half to 1-inch layer of activated

charcoal to clear out the air inside the closed
environment.
● Step 3:- Add 1 to 2-inch deep layer of potting
soil.
● Step 4:- Before planting, arrange the plant life
miniature, ferns are a terrific desire in closed
surroundings, in a field with sufficient space to
develop. Don’t overcrowd. Trim leaves with
herb snips, if essential, to give plants room to
breathe.
● Step 5:- Hollow out a space in the potting soil for
every plant. Firmly pat the soil across the plant’s
roots. Water plants (however don’t overwater, stop
while the floor of the soil feels uniformly damp).
● Step 6:- Close the field and area the terrarium in a
well-lit spot, however out of direct sunlight, due to
the fact the glass will intensify the sun’s rays.
DECORATE
● If you'd like, decorate the inside of the
terrarium with small figurines, shells,
decorative stones, or other whimsical accents
spaced among the plants.
● Clean the glass as needed. Every few weeks,
such as when you're ventilating your terrarium
(or as needed) -
- wipe down the inside of the glass case
with a damp cloth. A microfiber cloth
should be all you need to restore the
shine to your glass case.
❏ WARNING :- Never use any chemicals
or bleach, as these will harm plants.
BUDGET
● The glass container is easy to get from
anywhere asa home, we can get that for free
but if we want a new one, a good one will be
around 800-1000 rupees.
● The pebbles can be obtained for free from
outside like playgrounds, parks etc.
● The activated charcoal will cost around 1000
rupees.
● The potting soil will cost nearly 500
rupees.
● The cost of ferns and plants will
depend on various factors.
● The total budget by estimation is 3500
rupees.
