CHAPTER 5

Mollie the mare, having become more and more troublesome, eventually animal farm: the
work and the fact that there are no humans to make a fuss on her do not suit her. the pigeons
tell the animals that they have seen her in Willingdon with a scarlet ribbon around her
forelock. the winter comes around again, and, whereas last winter the time was spent on re-
education committees and the like, this winter there is much conflict over the policy.
Snowball wants to industrialize the farm and make it more efficient by means of field grains
and fertilization methods. Napolean disagrees with everything snowball has to say, especially
what he says about a plan for a windmill.

Snowball maintains that a windmill would supply the farm with electricity, and that electricity
would make the work of the farm much easier, giving the animals much more time foe
leisure. Napolean says that food production is much more important and if they spend more
time building the windmill they will starve to death. The animals divide into two groups one
backing snowballs, the other Napolean. Finally, the matter is to be decided on one of the
Sunday meetings by a vote. snowball stands un and describes the benefits of a windmill,
Napolean stands up and says very quietly that the whole idea is nonsense. snowball again
stands up in passionate defence of his of his idea and it is very clear that if it goes to the vote
Napolean will win. At this point Napolean makes a strange high-pitched whimper, and nine
puppies which he has educated bound in and attack snowball. he flees and just escapes with
his life.

Napolean now announces that Sunday meetings will now come to an end, that the pigs will
decide all policy and communicate it to the animals, without discussion. four young parkers
squeal in disapproval but at a growl from the dogs they shut up. Later, when squealer comes
around to explain the expulsion of snowball, somebody remembers his bravery at the battle
of the cow shed and. Squealer explains that loyalty and obedience are much more important
than bravery and that anyway time will show that his role at the battle of the cow shed was
much exegeted. deplane, he says is what is needed. If they do not have that then jones will
come back. The animals again find this argument unanswerable.

Three weeks later it is announced that the windmill will be built Afterall. squealer is again sent
around to explain the decision. It appears from what he says that the windmill was napoleons
idea from the start, that he had seemed to oppose it to get rid of snowball who was a bad
influence. he calls this “Tactics”. The animals do not know what this word means, but
squealer whisks his tail so persuasively and the dogs that accompany him everywhere growl
so fiercely, that they accept what he says.
