Half Yearly Examination - (2023-24)

Class – XI Max.Marks-50
Subject- Biology Time-2:00 Hrs.
General Instructions:
(i) All questions are compulsory.
(ii) The question paper has five sections and 27 questions. All questions are compulsory.
(iii) Section–A has 16 questions of 1 mark each; Section–B has 4 questions of 2 marks each; Section– C
has 4 questions of 3 marks each; Section– D has 1 case-based questions of 4 marks; and Section–E has 2
questions of 5 marks each.
(iv) There is no overall choice. However, internal choices have been provided in some questions. A
student has to attempt only one of the alternatives in such questions. (v) Wherever
necessary, neat and properly labeled diagrams should be drawn.
Section - A
1. In photosystem I, the first electron acceptor is
a.Plastocyanin b.Cytochrome c.Ferredoxin d. An iron-sulphur protein
2. In Hatch and slack pathway, the primary carbon dioxide acceptor is
a.Phosphoenolpyruvate b.Phosphoglyceric acid
c.Oxaloacetic acid d.Rubisco

a.Mitosis b.Meiosis c.Miosis d.None of the above
6. Which phase of mitosis involves the separation of sister chromatids and their movement to opposite
poles?
a. Prophase b. Metaphase c. Anaphase d. Telophase
7. Which monosaccharide is known as "blood sugar"?
a. Glucose b. Fructose c. Galactose d. Sucrose
8. The building blocks of proteins are:
a. Nucleotides b. Amino acids c. Monosaccharides d. Fatty acids
9. Who proposed that new cells arise through cell division of pre-existing cells
a.Robert Hook b.Rudolf Virchow c.Robert Brown d.Singer

Directions: In the following questions, a statement of assertion is followed by a statement of reason.
Mark the correct choice as:
(a) If both Assertion and Reason are true and Reason is the correct explanation of Assertion.
(b) If both Assertion and Reason are true but Reason is not the correct explanation of Assertion.
(c) If Assertion is true but Reason is false.
(d) If both Assertion and Reason are false.
13. Assertion : 6 molecules of CO2 and 12 molecules of NADPH+ + H+ and 18 ATP are used to form
one hexose molecule.
Reason : Light reaction results in formation of ATP and NADPH2.
14. Assertion : Mitosis maintains the genetic similarity of somatic cells.
Reason : Chromosomes do not undergo crossing over.
15. Assertion: The incomplete oxidation of glucose into lactic acid or ethanol is fermentation.
Reason: In only prokaryotes, it takes place under anaerobic condition.
16. Assertion: Organisms are made up of cells.
Reason: Cells are structural unit of living organisms. A cell keeps its chemical composition steady within
its boundary.
Section – B
17. Observe the given figure and write name:-

a) Is this composition present in a plant cell or animal cell?

b) label any 4 parts.
18. What is the product of the following?
a) Aerobic glycolysis in skeletal muscle b) Anaerobic fermentation in yeast
19. What is mitosis. Identify the given stage of mitosis and mention its features.

20. Why mitosis is called as equational division. And meiosis is reduction division.
Or
Describe the changes which occur in metaphase and anaphase of mitosis.
Section - C
21. Identify the given diagram. Label the parts marked as A,B,C,D
22. Differentiate between plant cell and animal cell. (any 3)
23. The functional groups in amino acids are weak bases and acids chemically, the ionization is affected
by the pH of the solution. The activity for several enzymes is affected by the ambient pH and is depicted
in the curve below, explain in brief.

24. What are some of the assumptions we make in the respiratory balance sheet? Are these valid enough
to be applied to living systems? State any 2 comparisons between aerobic respiration and fermentation
corresponding to respiration.
Section - D
25. Identify the given diagram. Label any 4 parts along with their one main function.

Section - E
26. Make a flow chart of aerobic glycolysis
Or
Make a flow chart of TCA cycle.
27. What is a stomatal apparatus? Draw a well-labeled diagram of stomata.
