NUTRITION IN

PLANTS
Let us recall…
•Why do all living things require
food?
•What are the components of
food that are necessary for our
body?
What do you understand by the
term ‘nutrition’?
•The process of taking in food by an
organism and its utilization by the
body is called nutrition.
Name two processes
by which energy is
obtained from food.

Nutrition and Respiration

Modes of nutrition

Modes of
nutrition

Autotrophic Heterotrophic
Autotrophic mode of nutrition

•This mode of nutrition is followed by green

plants.
•Green plants can make their own food in
presence of sunlight by a process known as
photosynthesis.
•Auto=self; trophism=feeding
What are the raw materials required
by the green plants to make food?

•The raw materials required by the green

plants to manufacture food are carbon
dioxide and water.
•The carbondioxide is present in the air and
water is found in the soil.
What is the source of energy
utilized by the plants for the
process of photosynthesis?
I am the ultimate
source of energy.

Where does the process of
photosynthesis occur in a green plant?

The process of photosynthesis

occurs in -
•green young stems and
•green leaves
What enables these green parts to carry
out the process of photosynthesis?
• These parts contain green coloured pigment known as
chlorophyll.
• Chlorophyll is contained in cellular structures known
as chloroplasts which are present in the cells of these
parts.
